Chicer?

Chicer?

Just reading my Lucky magazine and one of the photo layouts mentions how one can make a skirt look 'chicer' if pairing it with some top. Um...chicer? Is that a word?

And the opposite page talks about 'vintagey' clothing. I don't know but I find it annoying that this magazine dumbs down these words for sake of looking cute or hip. I also saw the word 'make-upy' thrown in there a few times. (as in 'this foundation won't make you look too make-upy'). Just bothers me a bit. I don't see why they have to put 'chicer' instead of 'more chic'; 'vintage inspired' sounds so much better than 'vintagey' to me too.

Any opinions?

I tend to make up words when I talk - it's a hazard of watching too much pop-culture oriented television - Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Family Guy, Simpsons, etc.

But I don't like to read them like that in a publication. I saw the same thing and kept saying it out loud...'chicer....chicer....nope!'

On one hand, I think it lends to the ever growing problem our country has with grammar.

On the other hand, it's a fluff magazine, and some new phrases even make it into the Dictionary - D'oh!

I see what you mean - hearing Lorelai and Rory on Gilmore Girls saying 'oh that dress you are wearing is so...vintagey' woudln't annoy me but seeing it on paper did. Weird huh?

But 'D'oh' wasn't part of another word before and 'dumbed' down - it is brand new.

And now that I think of it I never hear anyone saying 'd'oh!'anymore...after it became 'official' it wasn't popular to say anymore I guess!

I never heard of the word chicer! at first i thought maybe it could be a typo and they intended it to say 'nicer,' but i just looked it up:
chic
adj. chic·er, chic·est
Conforming to the current fashion; stylish: chic clothes; a chic boutique.
Adopting or setting current fashions and styles; sophisticated: chic, well-dressed young executives. See Synonyms at fashionable.

n.
The quality or state of being stylish; fashionableness.
Sophistication in dress and manner; elegance.

i'm such an idiot! When I read it, I didn't even think that it was related to the word 'chic' and I was pronouncing it as if it rhymed with 'nicer' That word just looks strange to me!
