My fiance and I would like to offer baby sitting services to our family for the hours of the reception. What is standard to charge someone for five hours worth of sitting for a child under 12 years of age? We anticipate having a minimum of 20 kids so we are not sure what is the 'right' amount to give a sitter?
Any child care workers please feel free to respond!

Re: Child Care Question
just to clarify, the babysitter would be in someone's house-not at the reception, right? if you are having 20 kids, you need more than 1 sitter...what are the age ranges? i am in childcare and i babysit often...i charge $10/hour for babysitting one child, and i usually get more $ for 2 or more children. for 20 kids I would say you need a minimum of 2-3 sitters, depending on te age range of the children, and you might be able to get away with paying them each $10/hour. if you have one sitter in mind, they probably know one or two reliable people to help out as well. good luck.

Re: Child Care Question
I am having three families with kids and hiring three different baby sitters. I plan on giving them $100 each.

Re: Child Care Question
Well let me rephrase because we wouldn't have one sitter for 20 children. But I am trying to get a general idea of what is standard to pay someone for one child at five hours and then go from there...
We are still trying to figure out where we would have them watch the kids. My fiance and I don't live in the New Rochelle area and no one we knows does either. We thought about renting out a room at a hotel or conference space and asking them to provide us with a few tvs for the older kids who like to play video games and for the younger kids to watch cartoon movies. We would also provide the food and activities.

Re: Child Care Question

When I babysat I charged $10 an hour for 2 -3 kids (this was like 8 yrs ago)....so.. maybe $100 an hour?

Re: Child Care Question
I think it is a very sweet idea, but as a parent I can tell you that there is NO WAY I would leave my sons in the care of someone that I haven't met, haven't interviewed and don't know. Especially not in a hotel or a place that I am not familiar with. I think you should consult with the parents of the kids to see how many would actually be interested in taking advantage of the offer before you go through too much difficulty.
As to your question, I paid my nanny $12/hour plus tip which included watching both boys, playing with them, feeding them and light housework. When FH and I need a babysitter for a couple of hours we have 2 girls that are family members - we pay them $7-$10 hour.
I will be having a kids table at the reception and advised my friends that they were welcome to bring the wee ones. Most of our friends are NOT bringing the kids because they want a night that is completely kid free - but for the ones who are bringing them (because they have no choice or whatever) there will be 2 sitters to try to entertain them and keep them contained.
Hope this is helpful!
ETA: I am paying the sitters at the wedding $150 each and they will also be fed at the reception as guests.
