Children

I am getting married next November and I really DO NOT want children at my wedding, but my FMIL and FI wants them. I was thinking of having them only for the ceremony and cocktail hour and then get a babysitter for the rest of the time. Has anyone done this and where did the children go? Did you have transportation to take them to a hotel close by? Please let me know. This is the one thing that has been stressing me since the day I got engaged and I am at my FMIL's house now and I know she is going to bring it up again and I just want to scream!

I had a similar problem. I have a lot of neices and nephews (all under 13) and I was unsure about whether I wanted kids at the wedding. My FI did not want them there and I knew that was important to him so we chose to only have those over the age of 10. I have two words of advice for you
1- the decision is yours and your FI (not your fmil). Go with what the two of you want and let everyone else know that, while you value their opinion, you and you FI have made the final decision together already.
2- how important is having kids at the wedding to your FI? If he isn't that passionate about it (and is being swayed by his mom) than maybe you can let him know that it would be really important for you to have no kids. If he is passionate about, than let him tell you why so you can understand it better. And if it is something he really wants, than compromise with him (ex - kids are allowed over a certain age).
When we dealt with the situation, I was definilty worried about what my family was going to think and say (I also had knots in my stomach over this when I got engaged ). But remeber that this is YOUR wedding and must represent what you and your FI want. Sorry this is so long, but I understand how important this issue is. Good luck!

Did you block any hotel rooms? I know by the Crest Hollow there are 2 hotels nearby ( The new one the Fox Hollow Inn and Woodbury Executive Suite, I think ) Who would be bringing the children to the hotel? I think that is a good idea but people might not like the idea of their children driving in someones car. I totally agree with the no children issue. I am having an adult reception and no one (except 1 cousin) complained. You should do what you want it is your wedding. Good Luck

Re: Children

Jodi,

I totally feel your pain Unfortunately, this is going to have to be something that you and your FI discuss and your FMIL should plainly butt out! But, it shouldn't be you to let her in on this - it should be your FI. Because you confronting her with this will only bring tension btwn. the two of you. Your FI has a 20or30something relationship with her and can't expect you to just jump into something like that. And he needs to realize that even, if he agrees with his mom (in front of her he needs to stick by you) and then you two can discuss/argue about it in private.
It's hard enough stressing over things that go along with planning a wedding. You don't need to add the mix of kids, and worrying about how they will behave, etc.
I'm in the same situation right now, and the best advice I can give you is to stick to your guns because as long as you've been compromising with him on other aspects of the wedding and letting him have his way with certain things there is no reason that you can't come up with a compromise that both of you can be happy about.
Good luck with this - I know it's hard.

Re: Children

Thanks so much for all the wonderful advice. Unfortunately my FI wants the kids there and thinks I am not at all taking his feelings into consideration. I spoke to my FMIL this morning and came right out and told her that I am really upset about the children situation and I agreed to have the children at the ceremony, cocktail hour and the beginning of the reception. I am going to see about getting a sitter that will stay with the children in the bridal suite, which is fairly large. I just feel this is my day and do not want 12 kids out on the dance floor all night.
