I'm not sure if this has been posted before or not but ...
I just got an invitation to a wedding that, on the response card had printed 'no children at reception please'
is this tacky or unheard of? my FH family lacks wedding ettiquette BIG TIME and unfortunately I may need to use this on their invites..( well for the families where children aren't invited that is...)
any feedback would be appreciated.

It's not unheard of; but it could have been better stated. Like Adult only reception to follow.... something like that.

I think your supposed to put Adult reception to follow instead.

If you're going to go that route, go with 'Adult Reception to Follow' over 'no children at the reception'. Some people would argue that they're both tacky but as far as the lesser of two evils, definitely do the adult one.

Yeah - I guess some people would think it was in poor taste - but I have heard that if you don't put 'adult reception' on the invites, people with kids will just add them to the reply card with out asking first - then you have to call them or just let them have their way.
I don't really want kids at mine, but I am going to have my family and the FH 's family spread the word, instead of printing it on the invites.

If you are having a separate reception card, I would probably put it on that instead of the invite.

I never heard of 'No children...' that sounds kind of rude. Adult reception to follow has been on most invites I receive.
Just a question though - if the kids aren't listed on the inner or outer envelope - shouldn't people know that they aren't invited? I am trying to decide if we are going to put Adult reception to follow on our invites and I was wondering if people will just include their kids....

In theory, whoever is listed on the inner envelope is who's invited, but many people either don't know that or just chose to ignore it. If you are very strict on rthe idea of 'adults only' or if you will feel uncomfortable calling people after getting their RSVP and clarifying that you weren't inviting children, than I would just go with 'Adult reception' on your reception card.

That is what we are leaning to, but I feel like I shouldn't have to - ya know?

I struggled with this too. I put 'Adult Reception to Follow' on the reception card and chose the response card that asks for the # of persons attending. That way, if they STILL don't get it, I will call and tell them. I think, ettiquette wise you are not supposed to put that on the card, but I figured those who know not to bring the kids will not be offended, because they will probably understand why I am doing it, and the others will get the hint.

That's exactly what I did...

Don't assume anything! People will write names in, bring extra guests, etc. even though they are not written on the inner envelope.

Re: children at the reception
Whenever I get invitations to a wedding, I know that whatever names that are on the inner envelope is who is invited. But FH family has NO wedding etiquette at all and I feel as if I have to spell things out to them
Maybe I will just do the adult reception to follow phrase and try to pass along my message as word of mouth as well, I really dont want to or think I should have to call people after they respond....
