Children & weddings

FH and I don't know how to approach this one. I don't want kids other than our nieces and nephews at the wedding. That's not a problem for my family however, he doesn't have any brothers and sisters so it shouldn't be a problem for him. Although, he has tons of cousins with kids and I don't know if they will know how to tell them no kids. ANyone have a similar problem or can suggest how to deal with it?

We're in the same boat. We just want children of the immediate family - not everyone elses. It will get too crazy let alone paying for a full size adult dinner for a child who most likely won't like what's being served to begin with! I've been trying to ignore this problem for now but I really should broach the topic at this point. :( Anghuy1 and I need HELP!!! How do we handle this???

1. Your wedding, you rules. Invite whatever children you want. You can akways blamne limited child seating on the caterer.
2. Typically, a caterer will negotiate on 1/2 pricing or such for children, ie free if <3 y, 1/2 price if 3-10y...

Re: Children & weddings

We, too, are only having our nieces and nephews at the wedding. We don't want other children. Here is what I'm finding:

1) A lot of people don't want to bring their kids, as it will hinder their enjoyment of the event.

2) If you appeal to someone's sense of reason, they will understand. I have told a few people, any combination of the following things:

**If we invite your kids, we have to invite Jane's kids, then we will have to invite, Bob's kids.... Before you kow it, it more closely resembles a day care center than a wedding.

**We have a limited amount of space and are being forced to make difficult decisions to include the people important to us and our parents.

**We are paying $100 per head and simply don't have an extra $1000 to invite everyone's children, as much as we would like to.

Anyone who can't understand can stay home. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but if people have children, chances are they, too, at one point were married and should empathize with the difficult decisions engaged couples are faced with. Good luck!!!

You're not obligated to invite anyone's kids.
I'm sorry, but I feel very strongly about this whole 'invitation' thing. - To be invited to someone's wedding is an honor, for people to 'expect' their children to be invited as well, and to voice that opinion is just rude.
Send the invite to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. End of story. and if anyone has the audacity to ASK you why their kids were not included - tell them it's a budget issue.

FMIL has been spreading the word for us with his family and I'm doing the same with mine. We have heard that it's poor etiquette to put it on the invitation, but Emily Post never said anything about a website or STD! We have on our website under the 'Events' section info about the reception and a sentence saying: Unfortunately, due to space limitations we will not be able to accomodate any children at the wedding. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We thought about including on the STDs too in case people are looking to make flight arrangements, but we figure anyone young enough to have kids knows how to go to a website for the 'Travel Info' we talk about on the STD.

Fortunately for me, there aren't too many YOUNG YOUNG kids in either of our family. Having said that, however I have some reservations about the age restriction because I have a devil of a counsin who's only 7-8, but who's two other awesome sisters are 13 and 16. I'd love to invite the older girls, but I tend to think I'm safer going no children over having 13+ Good Luck with this decision! I agree with some of the other ladies here though....some parents might actually enjoy the night out together!

I wouldn't put 'Adult Reception to Follow' on the invitation since you are having some children, but when you send out the invites do not write & family on the envelope. The parents should take that to mean that their children are not invited.
