Re: china- do we really need it?

we registered for reall nice everyday plates that can also be used for special occasions. we feel that it is kind of senseless to spend thousands pf dollars on something that your probably only going to use once or twice a year tops.

just my 2 cents

I registered for it and will definitely be using it. I think it is a personal decision only you know if you forsee using it in the future.

We registered for it, but it took a little arm twisting before my FH agreed to it. I know I'll use it. I love formal place settings and have been in love with the pattern since I saw it for the first time over 3 years ago. Besides, there wasn't much that we needed to register for since we own a home and have most things already.

This is my second marriage and when I registered for my first I wanted china really bad. Now that I am getting married again I feel that if you entertain & plan on using it register for it. But there is no guarantee that you will get it all at your shower. You might be missing a few pieces here and there. JMO.

But it does look good sitting there in your china closet. The only thing is the dusting.

We did not register for china only everday dishes. That was only because, we have DH's great grandmothers china from the 1800's. It's pretty and it looks alot like the china you in stores today. When my mom got married the 1st time she got china that she did not want at my grandmothers insistence. She gave it away after she got divorced. When her and my father got married, grandma insisted that she have china. It's now at my uncle's house. It was in our attic for the last 10 years. DH and I both agree it looks nice, but it is not a nessecity. I'm glad we registered for things that we actually use everday!!

We only registered for China.

My husband loves the pattern, and we use it all the time. We received all 8 settings that we registered for, plus the tea, sugar, creamer, a big serving plate and a bowl.

The nice thing is that we now have a set we can build on, and as was said earlier, we also have something to pass on to our children.

I feel it is a personal decision, and you need to decide what is more important for you both.

We realized that there was no way we would get a complete set if we had registered for both a casual and a formal, so we dropped the casual.

Everyday/Casual set only for us!!!! If it brakes, it will not be too bad to replace, if we hate it in 10/20 years it can replaced

I am not a china person although I think it's pretty.
I registred for everyday dishes and Mikasa dishes for special occasions.

On the topic of china.

We registered for china. I love to entertain. The kitchen is the biggest part of our apartment. I cannot wait to have people over (we just moved so we're still unpacking) and use the china and the good crystal. We didn't go gangbusters registering for all the accessories though- just one bowl & one platter. My Mother was very sweet and bought us all the china settings for our wedding gift. My grandmother bought us matching chargers, napkin rings and individual salt & pepper shakers for each setting (yes, that's a little overboard.. but cute to have, I guess)
If you aren't the type of person that wants it- just get nice dishes. A friend of mine didn't register for china but got 2 nice patterns from Crate & Barrel instead.

Re: On the topic of china.

Funny I just posted my china in the other thread!

At first we really didn't want china & had no intention of registering for any. Was gonna do everyday dishes. But then I found a set I fell in love with that's everyday china so we're going for it.

If you really don't want it, don't do it.

we actually went and registered for china but when I got home my parents didnt understand why b/c our family never has formal dinners. They actually have two set of china from their wedding that they never used. So they gave it to us!! LOL... watch it stay in the box for another generation HAHA.

I thought this was a good posting. I did not register for the china for all the same reasons. I register for a plain Mikasa everday set. I figured since it is plain, at holidays I can mix in any kind of holiday pattern bowls and it would work.

Luckily I have received my Great grandmothers China. I don't think I would have registered for it otherwise, even though I agree that 20 years down the road I might really want it.

We are just registering for a nice set of everyday China.

Re: china- do we really need it?

I registered for it b/c I wanted good china. My mother uses hers easily 10 times a year - we use it whenever we have family over or for every holiday dinner. I know I will use mine even if I use it less often in the next few years I will want it down the road.
My friend choose not to register for good china for her wedding 5 years ago and they are now VERY sorry that they didn't. They just recently went out and purchased a few settings and are asking relatives now to give it to them for holiday gifts.
I think you need to consider you current and possible future life. Will you or your FH need to entertain for business reasons. Will you want to have nice china for nicer holiday dinners? If the answer is yes. It might be worth registering for something - and if you get it great but if you don't you won't be so upset. Then you can put is aside for the day you decide you are ready to use it. JMO. Also there are less formal china that you could consider if you do not want something very formal. There are some beautiful patterns out there that are not ridiculously expensive in case you break it
