What is the difference between 'melting chocolate' and chocolate bars?
I want to make fancy chocolate covered pretzel rods for my office and my mom INSISTS that I get melting chocolate. Why can't I just use Hershey bars?

Re: Chocolate Question
I think melting chocolate is a different consistency and won't burn like a Hershey bar

Re: Chocolate Question
I don't really know the difference. I usually buy Ghiaredelli (sp?) bars, nestle chocolate chips or hersheys and just melt it. I have even used Lindts chocolate. It all good to me. This is for things that I use at home.
I do get melting chocolate when making chocolate covered strawberries, lollipops and things like that. So the girls are right melting chocolate would be better and nicer.

Re: Chocolate Question
There is definitely a difference. I love baking with Ghirardelli and Scharffenberger (sp.?) chocolate. I wasn't crazy with what Chocolate Duck offers, though... just didn't like the taste (then again I am more of a dark chocolate lover, so it could just be a preference thing).

Re: Chocolate Question
I am a big chocolate covered person...and I make a lot of stuff like this. Trust me...don't use Hershey's!! It does not harden the same way melting chocolate does, the consistency is much softer. You can tell the difference when you bite into a piece of melting chocolate as opposed to a Hershey bar. If you use a Hershey bar it will likely soften and be a big mess instead of a neat little package. It also melts at a much lower temperature, so if you are in a heated car or house..it's curtains.
I usually buy the Wilton's melting chocolate. It tastes really good on pretzels and strawberries! You can get it in Party City and places like that. Otherwise I get stuff from specialty candy stores. Yes Chocolate Duck is yummy yummy.
