Choosing a Gown - Need Input Please

Choosing a Gown - Need Input Please

Okay, so I haven't set foot in a store yet, but I spend endless hours thinking about what type of gown I want to look for -- do I like a particular designer, do I know I want something off-the-shoulder ???

How did you go about taking the first step? I think I have FEAR because I have no idea what I'm looking for !!! Plus I'm waiting to lose weight until I shop.

Thanks for your input, girls!

go in there with an open mind. what looks great in a picture can be totally different on you.

I went in with no expectations, I was lucky enough to find a gorgeous gown on my very 1st outing!

Definitely let them bring you dresses to try on. the women who work in these stores know their stuff. they size you up and bring things that will flatter you.

good luck

i looked at magazines and got a 'sense' of the overall look and style of wedding i like through clippings i collected. then i tried on dresses to get a sense of what kind flattered me, and i went from there. between taste, budget, and what looks good you'll narrow the field!

I went in there thinking i wanted to see certain styles of dresses - and when i tried them on, they looked NOTHING like i was expecting. I think you get a sense of what you like once you try on a bunch - like do i want off the shoulder, beading, color, type of back, train length, etc..

Its really hard but you'll find something you like and then expand on it.

Don't worry about losing weight to try on the dresses. Most stores only carry a size 8 or 10 (which is really a 6 - 8 in the real world) so you'll probably end up getting the sample clipped closed anyway. Unless you're a size 6, its hard to get the samples to fit you.

Good luck!

go try on what you think you might like and when you put 'the one on' you will know

I had envisioned 'the dress' in my head. I thought that from all the pics in the magazines I knew exactly what I wanted. It turned out that when I started 'the hunt,' all dresses I had in mind were ALL WRONG! I started from scratch and tried on different types of dresses (straps, strapless, lace, tulle, etc.) before I narrowed down what type of dress I wanted. After realizing it was going to be strapless, I had to find what type of embellishments I wanted. My first and second choice dresses are nothing alike, but it just goes to show that you'll never know until you put it on!

Be willing to try on a variety of styles. What you think is going to look good on you might not. If the consultant suggests a style, try it on even if you don't think it will look good--you might be surprised.

Good luck!

have fun with dress shopping, it doesn't have to be too stressful! and shop soon bc some dresses take up to a year to get in and you are past that point already. go in with an open mind as far as style and see what looks good on you. magazine clippings might be helpful, but you'll know what styles you like one you after you try a few different ones on. good luck! ~lacey

GO SHOPPPING!! All gowns look different in person and on you than in the pictures. I found browsing pictures to be not helpful because once I got to the bridal shop my fav ideas looked terrible!

Also, try on EVERYTHING. I ended up getting a dress that I would have never thought in a million years I would like. Even as it was hanging on the hanger I didnt want to try it on. But once I put it on I loved it!

Keep an open mind and take your mom/FMIL/BMs for opinions.

As long as you have an open mind, go in there and let them dress you up. They do this all the time, so they'll have an idea of what will look good on your body type. You'll try some on and take it from there, I think it's the easiest way to do it. Don't look for what you want so much as what you don't want, that'll help narrow it down!! Good luck!

i wound up getting a completely different dress than i thought i would!

let the salespeople bring you dresses they think will flatter you, even if you think you'll hate it. that's how i found mine! i never would have tried it on unless she told me about it.

also, DO NOT focus on one designer!! a designer name means nothing at all! what matters is how YOU look in a dress

My advice is to go to Davids Bridal just to try on all the different styles, strapless, halter, capped sleeves, long sleeves, etc. They have all different sizes so you will get a good idea of what you like. Then if you want, go to different bridal salons now knowing what you want.
