Christmas: A Financial Burden

Original post by diamondgirly

I used to love Christmas, but lately with all our other planning expenses, I feel like Christmas has gotten way too commercial and everyone has forgotton the real meaning. I am a very generous person but I unfortunately have to cut corners this year! My fiancee and I explained to everyone that things are tight this year but for some reason I feel guilty not going all out like in years past! What are you girls doing for holiday presents? How are you budgeting? Any nice inexpensive gift ideas for your family/parents??

I have always thought Christmas was too commercialized, but I love to give presents. I go overboard every year but this year I can't do it. I have my wedding to save for in 1 year and a half and my best friends wedding to save for in September. I can't get everyone everything I would like to and I fell so guilty! I hope they understand. I told everyone not to get me anything!

I am glad I'm not alone, I was starting to feel like the grinch...lol. I also told my parents not to get us anything but they will anyway and it makes me feel bad because they are paying for the whole reception :( Sometimes I feel like all this saving and wedding planning makes me look selfish

I usually go all out but not this year. Only my nieces get presents this year. The rest of my family will definitely understand with the wedding coming up so fast. They just like to see me for the holidays anyway. FH was told about a month ago not to get me anything, this wedding is our present to each other anyway.

To tell you the truth I have been in the stores and they really haven't been busy. Maybe people wait till the day after Thanksgiving to start, but I just think the economy is really bad right now. I think everyone will just understand that we aren't going all out this Christmas. I just have no idea what to get anyone.

My family knows I'm saving & expect this to be a smaller Christmas. I guess I'm lucky because I am a manager for an off price retailer & I think that I got great gifts at great prices for eveyone. I cut corners by only doing one gift per person or couple. Also My FH & I are not exchanging gifts at all. I figure our gift will be our wedding & he totally agrees. Trust me, its not easy to work somewhere that I see things I want to buy for him (& other people, including myself LOL) every day & not buy them, but I know it will be worth it.

I can totally relate! Our wedding is right after Christmas and we told everyone no gifts We are just getting for our parents and we are cutting back on how much we give them too. It really does stink because I love Christmas and I feel like the Grinch

Re: Christmas: A Financial Burden

I love Christmas, and I love to give everyone gifts, but everyone understands that with the wedding in July and we're paying for it ourselves, there is very little extra cash to spend on the holidays. My parents don't want anything. My mom keeps telling me that I have this for her and that for her and something for dad. I'm not even going to have to shop for them. I told friends not to go crazy this year like they do every year because they can't afford it either, and we certainly can't spend on Christmas like we usually do. Everyone understands and will enjoy our wedding day even more because they are important enough to us to be there.

We are really cutting back this year and I'm sure our families know that we already have so much on our plates right now.

My suggestions are to look for the sales and remember it's the thought that counts. You can still give great gifts without spending a fortune.
