Church-Meeting w/ Priest Question...

Church-Meeting w/ Priest Question...

We are scheduled to meet w/ a priest at a church near our venue out east in 2 weeks. He asked that I bring a letter of permission from MY parish where I live just saying that it's ok for me to get married at another church.
My problem- I haven't been to my church (or any church for that matter) in like...ummm....YEARS!!!
So do I just walk in & ask them to write this letter for me even though I don't attend? (I am technically still a member of the parish).
Has anyone else had to do this?
Arrrggghhhhh!!!

I'm pretty sure that you can just go to your parish, whether you attend or not, and get a letter. I'd be surprised if they gave you a hard time.

They gave me a letter with no problem.
You will probably also have to get a baptismal certificate from your church.

I called my DHs church and asked them about the letter. They weren't very happy about him not attending in awhile but I told them he's been coming to mine with me. She told me to just mail the letter to her with $5 (donation) for each thing needed (one was the letter and one was stating that he was baptised there). She sent it with no problem. If you feel funny make a copy and mail it with a small donation. Make sure you make the copy in case it backfires

Re: Church-Meeting w/ Priest Question...

We are having similiar problem. i went to one church for years, moved about 5 years ago, did not attend another church since. I really want to get married in the old one and its near reception site...anyway, my mom called for me today and they were'tenative' about us getting married there since we are no longer members( new priest as well, does not remember us, old one moved to PA when he retired) so now I'm a little upset as I just assumed it would be ok...dumb move on my part.
Anyway, I would say to them honestly that you don't attend your church on a regular basis, holidays and occasional sundays and have never 'actually become a member', I think they will appreciate the ( kinda) honesty, and some churchs are ok with that.

my sister got married at a roman catholic church without ever having a communion/confirmation just because they believed that she wanted to be married there and how important it was, so they do do things sometimes that don't 'follow the rules'...it was probably just church courtesy ( if there is such a thing) that they said that...
good luck, let me know what happens

RIGHT!
I was so happy when we booked a hall right near the church I dreamed of getting married in....I never thought that they might say...NO!
Oh well...we have to call back on Tuesday to speak to the priest in more detail...why am I so scared? LOL
Good luck to us both

The church that I am getting married in asked me for a letter, and like you I haven't been there in years. I called them for the letter and my baptism cert. She had no clue as to what letter I was talking about. I called the priest at the church that I am getting married at and he said don't worry about it. just bring the cert. So you never know it may not be a big deal.

I am having the same problem. I can not understand why they make it so hard for you. There is absolutely no welcoming feeling you get from the church....which should be the most inviting place to be.

I had to get this letter. They gave me the run around for a while, though - I was convinced they were looking my name up in some database and found out I never contribute anything to the church (I have never once attended mass at this church!) so they weren't going out of their way to help me.

But eventually I talked to someone who was like 'oh, a letter? Sure I can do that over the phone right now and I'll be sure it gets mailed to the church you're getting married at'.

It's not a big deal - they do these letters all the time.

Wow. I haven't run into any of these problem with any churches we looked at. We were told to just, of course send the baptismal certificate. Now we don't have to worry since we've switched it back to FI's church. But can't you just say that you've been going with FH to His church? vice/versa? I don't understand why they should give you a problem.
