MY FMIL just told me that she spent $1000 on music (flutes, harp) for her daughter's wedding a few years back. Is this normal? What type of music is played - and what is the price? Thought it was 'free' with the fee for the ceremony.

Re: Church Music
We paid $800 for our music - but we had our own string quartet and trumpets. We did not use the church organ and singer.
Most churches, you pay a site fee, and then you also pay for the organist and singer. It is not 'free' with the ceremony fee unless they tell you that.

Re: Church Music
Thanks for responding! I had never heard of this. How was the music? Do you think it was worth having it?

Re: Church Music
It all depends on your own taste. I do not care for organ music too much, and we both wanted a string quartet and the trumpets, so that's what we went for. For us, it was definitely worth it, and were incredibly pleased with the results. It made the ceremony all the more beautiful.
We used The Royal Brass and they were just great. They are a vendor on this site as well.
We're paying $400 for a harpist for our ceremony, so it depends on how many instruments you're having and for how long. The ceremony site whether it would be a Church or the hall, would not normally include music. They would charge extra if they provided it (ie Church organist) or you would get someone external, which is probably what she did.

Re: Church Music
The Royal Brass will go anywhere you want them to go. They deal with churches and reception halls.
For us, they played a lot of classical music for the ceremony. The trumpets played outside before hand and for our recessional, and then again while we were all outside after the ceremony. I'm sure though that they will work with you and play whatever you want.

Re: Church Music
You mean the church ceremony, right? I have no clue; I wouldn't even know what kind of church music to ask them to play

Re: Church Music
Minnie, you could usually have them play whatever you want, not necessarily Church music. You can have classical or contemporary. I'm sure they have a list of most used music, and you could listen to them and pick from there.
StanWeist one of the vendors here, provides instruments for weddings, why don't you go on the vendor board, and ask him what kind of instruments are available and if he has a list of music that the Brides usually use. He also has a website.

Re: Church Music
Here minnie is the page for LIWeddings services for Music for the Ceremony. Browse through their sites, and see if there's anything you like. I'm using Janet King Harpist.
Thanks guys; I'm just so tired of all of this. It's hard enough to have to sit down and pick music for the reception - now this! I'm at the end of my rope with all this. Thanks very much though - really appreciate it!
I had a string trip for 2 hours...ceremony and cocktail...it was $750...booked in 2001

Re: Church Music
I would describe it as an added touch - not missed but it certainly adds to the ceremony. We looked into it, but decided against it for a couple reasons:
1- we had to pay the church musicians whether we used them or not ($200?)
2 - in our church, the musicians sit in the balcony in back of the church - so guests wouldn't even get to see the string trio/quartet. (At DH cousin's wedding, the quartet was right next to the pews and it added alot to the ambiance - I think its nice to see them as well as hear them)
3 - we could use that money elsewhere.
A great suggestion we got - check out music schools for students that do this. Its significantly cheaper.
I have to admit, I don't remember the music much during the ceremony - so I'm glad we didn't spend the money there.

Re: Church Music
just an added note: you should check with your church. Some require the 'outside' musicians to 'practice' with the church's musical director (which could cost more) and some churches have a lot of restrictions on the type of music allowed.

Re: Church Music
My ceremony is at my reception site. We have a pianist for both the ceremony as well as the cocktail hour. The fee is $200. His name is Jim Lowe & he is very nice. His # is 631-928-9830.
