Church Ques-posted on brides helping as well

My FH is presbyterian but we are getting married in a Catholic church where I was baptized, confrimed etc.

If FH was baptized and confirmed but in a Presbyterian church is it still ok for us to get married in the catholic church?

We arent having a full mass bc he is presbyterian, but I thought all along his family became presbyterian after he was baptized and confrimed only to learn last night he was baptized and confrimed but in a presbyterian church.

Does it matter?? Help?

This really depends on the church. I have heard of churches allowing it as long as you promise to raise the kids catholic. We've had jewish friends who were married catholic girls in the church.

you shouldn't have any problem getting married in a catholic church. it make take a little longer to approve you, but not horrible. the most likely thing to happen is that they will make you both agree to raise your children as catholics.

i am not catholic and got married in a catholic church, its fine they allowed it. I am still christian though so thats why i didnt really have to do anything and it was ok. All they asked me for was my baptismal certificate just to see that i did what was required of my religions. I am christian orthodox and all we have to do is get baptised, we dont have confirmation or communion that is all done during baptism. BUt once the other person is not part of a christian religion thats when i think it becomes more difficult. WHen i first brought this up when we went to book they asked what religion i was and then said 'ok thats fine its still part of christianity' We were able to book on the spot and didnt have to go through another process or anything.

also i heard from ppl on here that i would have to sign something or promise in some way that we raise our kids catholic and didnt have to do this at all.

this was our situation but reversed. FH is Catholic and I was baptized Episcopalian but confirmed Presbyterian, lol (pretty much the same thing)!

Our priest at the church we are getting married at (which neither of us were members of) just asked for my baptism certificate, as long as FH had all of his documents which he did. He did make us promise to raise our kids Catholic but it is just for paper, he even said to me that he 'apologized if it offended me and that he just wanted us to raise our kids right'.

So I'm not sure if churches are different, I would call and ask but as long as he was baptized and you have your paperwork it should be fine!

Thanks Ladies!!!

We had the whole meeting with the Deacon where we had to make the promise to raise our children Catholic. I just assumed (and I know thats thick minded of me) that if you were Baptized it meant it was done in a Catholic Church.

I am learning more now than I did thru all those years of religion classes!!

you mean any religion when youre baptised it was done in a catholic church? well the catholics yeah but every other religion does it in their own church.

I guess the church i got married in was one of the few that dont make us promise to raise our kids catholic. Bc so many had told me this on here before, i was having an issue with that lol only bc i dont think somebody should tell me what i HAVE to do it should be a choice and yes i know its only on paper but then again i just didnt like the whole concept of it, luckily i wasnt asked hahaha.

My FH was baptized Episcopalian (sp?) and we didn't have any problems. They just need his bapstimal certificate etc.

That is strange, our priest told us it was standard diocesan rule..... I just thought it was funny that he actually apologized for having to do it!

Trust me, I don't like it either espec. because there are a lot of things I don't agree with in the Catholic religion, but I let it go since he did apologize for it and just asked us to bring our kids to church, no matter what Christian denomination it is.

somebody else mentioned this on BHB about the altar part. I was married inside the altar not outside of it. ALSO, we were asked if we wanted to do a mass, they had no problem with this. The only thing they told me is that i obviously wouldn't be able to take communion thats all but my guests whom are catholic would've been able to.

We can get married on the altar. We had the option of having a Mass but he advised against it since half our guests wouldn't be able to take communion (or me!!) and we didn't like the fact we would be starting our marriage separated bc they wouldn't let me take communion (even though I take it in my own church ) so we are not having a full mass.

yeah same reason we decided not to do a mass. ITs funny bc i was more for a mass than DH was. He was the one who kept pointing out that not only will i not be able to take communion but so wont my family and their friends so theyre just going to sit there watching while all the catholics get up to do so, he felt it might be awkward and make them feel a bit out of place. If it was just me i had to worry about i wouldnt mind but yeah i can see now what he meant and it was better off.

yeah but i think theres a difference with taking it at your own church and then at a catholic church. ALSO with catholics technically not even every catholic should take it at any given time. They say you should have gone to confession at least sometime before more recent. Others still get up and take it but then you have others who wont get up and take it for this reason

Maybe the church you were married in wasnt as strict? Sometimes certain churches will not allow non-catholics to marry on the altar. The church i grew up in was very strict like that. Although maybe now with so many changes in our world they decided to change that.????

it probably does depend on the church. Alot of catholic churches now arent as strict, i remember them even talking about having to change with the times. But there will still be other churches that are very strict, i mean theres still churches that wont allow the bride to have bare shoulders in the church, now you can see most allow it but theres still afew of them that wont and you have to put something over

i was glad that they werent as strict and were very welcoming to me and had no problems. Because honestly i would've told DH to forget it if i felt i was being treated differently or felt that anything was pushed on me. Also they were real great but i guess alot of it had to do with the fact that DH was baptised there, had communion and confirmation there, he was an altar boy, his mom taught CCD for that church, they have a school too. His mother is part of the choir for many years and does alot of volunteer work for them. We attended church even before our wedding, we went every easter, christmas and for other occasions. Each time i was there for all these things we greeted the monsignor that married us.

Yea it all depends on your church, I think as long as you are you should be fine. But just make sure with the church.
Fh wasn't confirmed and he really did want to get confirmed and I thought this was going to a problem but it wasn't.

Yea that's definitely why we decided against it, although FH wanted to do it. But I am getting married in a Catholic church for him so he compromised. Our communion is very different, they come to you, you don't stand up and walk to the front. So my parents would have felt completely lost and awkward (as I did when I first went to church with FH!) and since they are paying for the wedding I didn't think this was right.

One of his family members suggested that I take communion but not have it blessed so I would be taking a 'fake communion', they let you do that apparently.

Yea, I was definitely not going for that idea, lol.
