Church question

I know nothing about the rules of the church!

1. Can you become a member in any parish you want, or do you have to live in the town of the parish?

2. How do make communion and confirmation if you haven't already? Do you need to take religion classes?

3. Do you have to make a donation to become a parish member and then again to get married there?

TIA

Re: Church question

please dont quote me on these answers i know some of them,

1. I think you can join any church you want, you dont have to live in the town of the church.

2.you can make your sacraments if you dont have them at your church, you will have to go for rel. Instructions and then on the eve of Easter they will confirm you in the church during Easter mass.

3.all church req some donation, you dont have to give alot. you will get donation env. in the mail for the weekend mass and you just have to put money in the env and put it in the collection baskets.

Re: Church question

Here's my two cents (and I hope it doesn't confuse you!)

1. Most parishes will allow you to register no matter where you live, but you will have to call the parish you want to register out to confirm that. My church asked what town I live in when I registered, but I'm in the neighborhood, so it wasn't a problem. But some churches are sticklers about 'parish confines.' I know someone who lives in Lindenhurst and he had a house in one part and belonged to one parish, and when he moved to another part of Lindenhurst, it was in the 'confines' of a different parish and he had to get a letter from the new parish stating he had permission to stay at his old parish (which he wanted to do because his kids were in lots of programs at the old church). When my sister moved, she wanted to register at a parish close to her kids' school. Parish 'A' said no because she didn't live in the confines, but Parish 'B' said of course, they welcome everybody. So it really depends on the church.

2. You can receive all your sacraments by enrolling in a RICA class at your church and you'll receive your sacraments at the Easter Vigil mass the Saturday night before Easter Sunday (It's a LONG Mass...but a very pretty one!)

3. When you register at the parish, you will be sent collection envelopes that you just put in the collection basket when it comes around every Sunday. I've given everything between $5 and $25...so it doesn't have to be much. They use the envelopes for 'attendance' so this way if you're ever asked to be a godparent or a sponsor for someone's communion, you're given a form to state that you are an active, practicing Catholic and this is how the church knows that you are. But that being said, my parish has over 6,000 registered members and only about 2,000 members use the envelopes. So it's not mandatory that you use them.

For me, you have to talk to the priest and then begin to contribute with the weekly envelope...

2. call up a parish by you and tell them your situation, they usually have adult classes.

3. you have to be baptized/confirmation to get married in the church (atleast the one by me)

Hope it helped....
I have the number for the diocese if u need :)

Re: Church question

i can pretty much answer your questions and I hope you will have more luck then I have had.

YOu must of have recieved your sacraments in order to get married in a catholic church. FH and I have been attending to confirmation classes every Friday night until Easter.

You must be a member of a Parish and 95% of them will want u to live within a certain mile range. For instance, FH and I live in B'klyn, but having the reception in LI and on a friday, The easiest thing to do is to also have a ceremony in LI, so far most of the Catholic churches are telling me I can't join b/c of my residence. I heard of some few churches that will allow me that are by JT. FM me if you want that info.

Good Luck
