Church question...

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get married in a church, but not belong to a parish? FH and I both grew up catholic, but have since stopped attending mass regularly. My son is baptized catholic at Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon, so I MAY belong to that parish (I can't remember). They were wonderful there when I was planning his baptism, so I'm thinking of talking to them about this. I'm not looking for a full catholic service, is that even possible? I just know that my parents and grandparents would really like to see us married in a church.

I'm sure the church where your son is baptisted would take you for a wedding. But other than that, I think for the most part you or your parents have to be parishioners. My church has the option of a full mass or ceremony. I think most churches do now. I wish we could do a short and sweet ceremony but my mom and grandpa really want the full mass -__-

Church question...

My fiancée and I were both raised Catholic but we no longer practice it either. However, it is very important for me that our kids are raised Catholic the way that I was (receiving sacraments and making communion/confirmation/religious ed classes). We originally did NOT want to get married in a church and have the reception/ceremony at the same place outside. I was worried that we weren't going to be able to raise our kids Catholic so I spoke with my neighbor who is a deacon at a Catholic church nearby. He said that we don't have to get married in the church, have our wedding the way we want and then he can do a 20 minute informal ceremony inside the church to make it catholic church official anytime after the wedding. He also said that if we don't get married in a catholic church then my fiancee and I can NOT be a godmother or godfather and that was also important to us. We don't belong to the church my neighbor works at but he said that we could still do it there because we're on the location border. Your parish might be determined where you live. I know for us it was like that and we were able to choose from 3 different churches because they're all in the surrounding areas. I know this is a little off topic of what you posted but it might be something else to take into consideration or something you never thought about..

I'm getting married in Holy Family Catholic Church and I'm not part of the parish. They just asked for our confirmation certificates to show proof we received our sacraments.

Thanks ladies! I am going to call the church where my son was baptised. Fh and I were both raised catholic, so even though we do not attend mass regularly anymore, I still would like to have our wedding in a church if we can. I know our families would like it too... just hoping for the short and sweet ceremony!

I'm catholic and my fiancé is Presbyterian--we're doing it in the church mainly because of my parents and aren't having a full mass--they seemed ok with that! I've made all my sacraments at St. Pat's in Smithtown which is where we're getting married--they're pretty good with the fact that only 1 of us is Catholic!

Depends on the church. Mine, St kilian in Farmingdale, says they won't. But I know some will. Especially if u used to being to the church!

A friend of mine is getting married at St. Raymonds in East Rockaway and they don't belong to that parish.

FH and I are getting married at our venue because of cost reasons, but we plan to make it an official Catholic marriage after the wedding.
