church weddings vs at the venue site

Is it true that in order for your children to get baptized you must get married in a church?

I don't think that's true- my parents weren't married in the church and me/my brothers were all baptized.

I'm not sure, but I do remember reading on one of the boards that someone was told that..

Someone recently posted about her sibling having to have a ceremony in church, years after the original wedding, in order to have the child baptized.

Would depend on which church really b/c everyone is so different from one another ...it would not hurt to ask though

Not talking from expereience....but thats such bullsh*t.
I'm not getting marred in a church (for many many reasons), but my children will be baptised.
When that time comes, lord knows i will pitch a fit if they give me any guff....

No offense to any religious people here, that was not my intent.

My best idea, would be to talk to your parish and see what they say.

i think it all depends on the priest of the church. some are ok with it while others are on such a power trip.

i heard mixed stories about that and people trying to get married.

My sister was actually talking about this with our family recently, bc her bf is agnostic and does not want to get married in a church (my uncle is a Catholic priest, so he does all of the family weddings and baptisms).

From what he was saying, in the Catholic religion at least, it is looked at as 'rejecting' your religion if you do not want to have your marriage recognized in a church. Therefore, it is looked at as if you do not want to raise your child in the 'faith' if you did not take it on yourself.

Do I believe this- absolutely not! I definitely do not go to church every Sunday or follow the Bible- I don't know many that do, so am I 'rejecting' my faith.??That being said, I don't know if all churches are the same or all priests for that matter.

HTH!

I know many people who did not get married in the church but were still able to baptize their children Catholic. I think it really depends on the parish, but I've never heard this being a problem.

NOT true.

HOWEVER, if you're Catholic, and it's important enough to you that you want to have your children baptized, then why is it not important for you to be married through the church? I would just think long and hard about that.

ETA: The Canon Law says that in order for a child to be baptized there must be hope that the child will actually be raised Catholic, which is where I think the issue comes in. If the parents are eschewing the sacrament of holy matrimony, will they be parents who will have their children 'Do as I say, and not as I do' and actually raise them in the Catholic church? That's where you can run into issues, but there is absolutely no law stating that if you're married outside the church, or even unmarried parents, you can't baptize your child.

As far as I know this is not true, unless this varies from parish to parish.
MY FH and his siblings are all baptized and his parents were not married in the church.
Also my brother is catholic but his wife not and they just christened their baby back in Dec.
The only thing the priest did was recommend that they do at some point get married, as it would be good for their marriage to be recognized by the chuch since that is the way they have chosen to raise their child.

There are a few good Catholic wedding books. I have 'The Catholic Wedding Answer Book' which gives shoirt responses with Canon citations to frequently asked questions. Got it in the marriage section of the religious store.

I'm not catholic- I'm Lutheran and am not getting married in my church. We have many OOT guests and FH and I didn't want people to possibly get lost going from ceremony to reception or have a long wait in between. My Pastor will be marrying us at the venue. There are many reasons people choose to not get married in a church that have nothing to do with religion.

I was referring to everything in general, but that's really good to know!

I think you'll find that some churches are more liberal/conservative than others. Generally though, no you don't have to. However, I can see why some churches might make it an issue. Baptizing a child means that the child is going to be raised in the faith, so it doesn't seem entirely illogical to me that there could be a problem.

It's a silly myth! ughhh the church is so annoying in my opinion! My parents were not married in a church and we were all baptized. Also, does this mean that children born out of wedlock cannot be baptized? For anyone to tell someone this is so silly! Sorry!

I agree that it depends on what church you belong to. I know people who have gotten married at their venue and then later had a 'church wedding' so that their union was recognized 'in the eyes on God.' And they did the church wedding so that their children could later be baptized.

Discuss it with your parish to find out.
