City Girl Becoming Suffolk County Girl - and Living with the INLAWS (long)

ARGH!!

Yesterday our landlord told us she is raising the rent in our building. We realized that it would be too many years before we could put together even a 10% downpayment on a house if we continue to live here.

Our solution is to move in with my FH's family for a year and a half, pay off all our credit cards, and stash away enough to get us out of there and into our own home.

This is the last thing I wanted to do - I am independent, I love the city, I haven't lived with my own family since I was 18.

BUT - I do want to own a home and have a child, and for us, this seems like the fastest route, and we're not getting any younger (we're 32).

SO - what about the wedding??? Well, what do you think of this ? To me, to be honest, the house is more important than the reception, so I thought we'd buy the house, then get married and have a BBQ in our new backyard. Thank god I haven't put a deposit on anything yet, but my city wedding is out the window.

Thanks for reading all of this. So many changes! I will really have to try to keep my sanity.

Sounds like a hard decision
But it also sounds very practical & smart
Lots of Luck to you in your decision

That was definitely a big and difficult decision. It sounds like you have it worked out and I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible so that you and your FH can attain your dream as soon as possible

if a house is what you want, more than a bif wedding then I say, get married in Vegas and have a BBQ in your backyard. If you are going to look back years from now and be dissapointed that you did not have a big wedding with all the frills, then you may have to put off the house for a bit.

My husband and I talked about having a VERY small wedding and then having a large party for all of our friends and family but I really wanted to walk down the isle with my daddy!!

You will definatly save money moving in with the in-laws so maybe instead of cutting out your wedding all together, you can scale back.

Best of luck with whatever you choose!!

Thanks you guys. The ceremony means a lot to me, but the tradiational reception doesn't.

I will have some commuting to get used to.

You can have a beautiful intimate gathering for your wedding of just your immediate family.

now that you are moving in with the ILs...maybe you will be able to have your city wedding...also think about the off peak times in the year...

We actually had to make the same decision and ended up deciding against it, when we were in the basement (what would be our room) with the door closed and someone barged in...make sure you get privacy issues cleared!!!

Yes, we will have to talk to the FIL's about privacy. I hope the time flies by.

That's a difficult decision. But keep your focus on your goal of owning a home and the time will fly by. Down the road if you feel like you missed out on something by not having a big wedding you can always have a big bash and renew your vows.
Best of luck to you.
