City Sales Tax To Go Up This Weekend
MAY 28TH, 2003
City shoppers will have to start digging deeper this weekend.
The City Council plans to vote Wednesday on a measure to raise the city’s portion of the sales tax on Sunday, when a state hike also takes effect. Altogether, the sales tax in the five boroughs will rise from 8.25 percent to an unwieldy 8.625 percent.
The exemption on clothing purchases up to $100 will end.
“It's sort of a bittersweet pill to take, but I think it’s medicine that will help get us through this crisis,” said Manhattan Councilman Bill Perkins.
The agreement between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the City Council marks a turnaround for Speaker Gifford Miller, who had wanted to delay the vote for a month as he sought assurances the new revenue would be used for what he called essential city services.
If the deal passes, sources say, the city will restore $50 million to $75 million in proposed cuts to social services, including an AIDS prevention and assistance program. A plan to double recycling fines will also be dropped.
“Clearly, we are in budget negotiations with the mayor,” said Councilman Leroy Comrie, of Queens. “We are bargaining, and we will use whatever is necessary to protect the quality of life of New Yorkers.”

I guess everyone will be going back to NJ to shop. No tax!!! How is the city going to be making more money if everyone does not shop in NY because of the tax increase but goes to NJ to shop?

I dont like that, I like the no sales tax on clothes.
Re: City Sales tax to go up this weekend...Saw this on line
it just makes sense...not that I am for paying sales tax (especially on clothes), but the city is taking a beating right now...and it could save jobs and services that are needed..

I understand that it makes since but I just think that the city will be losing alot of business to the stores in NJ where there is no tax charged.

I figured this was coming. How could it not? While I am not in favor of paying even more taxes, at least this I have some control over. Even though I know I probably wouldn't, I can choose to go to Jersey if I wanted to or choose not to buy the shirt or shoes or what ever it is.

Well, if you choose to go shopping in NJ, the bridge tolls also went up, so they get you one way or the other. Am I the only one who doesn't think it's worth going to NJ? The traffic, the bridge tolls, the gas for the car, the time I'm wasting. No thanks, I'll Suck it up and pay the tax in Manhattan.

SomedayBride, I feel the same way about shopping in NJ. For the time and expense to get to NJ I would rather stay where I am to shop (NYC or Nassau). And in all honesty, even though NYC didnt have sales tax on clothes for a while, I still usually shopped in Nassau county.

I won't go to Jersey. I used to go to school at Fordham at the Rosehill Campus. The thought of being on the Cross Bronx Expwy, Whitestone Bridge/Throgs Neck, or Belt Pkwy makes me not want to be anywhere near NJ! The traffic is UGH!!
Does Suffolk County have sales tax on clothes? I haven't shopped out there in so long I can't remember.

When I went to Buy Buy Baby yesterday, I was charged 8.5% and then 4.5%, both say tax on them, and it wasn't clothing.

I would call them. They might have had some sort of programming glitch or something.
