The Catholic church will not marry you ONLY if you were already married in a Catholic Church. A lot of people get married in court then get married in the church

It's not the same ceremony though, it's called a convalidation, it just validates your existing wedding in the catholic church. Beyond that I don't know.

They will do a ceramony but NO ONE can remarry you. They will do a committment ceramony or renewal of vows. But they cant actually marry you that day and the wording has to change a little.

This is exactly correct. It will be a renewal of vows since you are already married.

I just wanted to add that my brother did this and as far as anyone could tell, his church wedding was the same as any other wedding. They might change it slightly, but not so much that anyone would notice

Re: civil ceremony before catholic
My friend was pregnant and got married in a civil ceremony. Then after the baby was born had a ceremony in a catholic church. They had a full mass. I couldn't tell the difference between her wedding and the other catholic ceremonies i'd been to.

Hey, Same here my friend got married in a civil ceremony and got married in the catholic church a year later....did her vows the same everything....the priest said that in the eyes of the church they were not married. So as far as he was concerned this was the first time they were getting married and the fact that they were married in a civil ceremony already didnt matter... So dont worry. Call your church and they will put your mind at ease.

You're fine. Don't worry. We had a civil ceremony 7 years ago and are exchaning our vows in Church this summer in a full mass. The church calls it a convalidation. Contact your parish to make arrangements. As long as you have never been married in the church, then as far as the church is concerned you were never married. You need to be able to provide them certain documents, i.e. a baptism certificate and you'll have to get another marriage license for the ceremony.
Edited to repsond to prior post: the wording and the ceremony are not any different than a regular wedding ceremony.

Definetly not true. You will have to get another marriage license though for your church wedding. I did it when I was a teenager and we are doing it now. We are getting married on June 2nd in Vegas and then getting married on June 2nd 2007 in St. Kilians.

Re: civil ceremony before catholic
My FI was married before in a Catholic Church. He is divorced and is in the process of getting an annulment ( ) We are continuing as planned with our civil ceremony at the reception site. Once the annulment goes through we are getting married (again ) in the Catholic church so it is recognized by the church.
