I read that you are waiting to give Paul the MMR. Emma went and had shots today. DTaP and Hep. B. She is due in Jan for MMR and Polio. I want to wait for the MMR because of the possible side effects... if you don't mind, what is your reasoning? I am looking for reasons to put it off as long as I can.

Can I butt in....

I can't answer for Claud but we are also waiting on the MMR shot. Possible links to autism are too inconclusive to rule out. My pediatrician doesnt disagree so we are waiting. In NY State children do have to have all their immunizations to attend school but he has a couple years so we are holding off.

Re: Claud

I have been debating the mmr thing as well. I have been teaching children with autism for 5 years and before I had a child of my own would say that there is absolutely no scientific evidence that links the mmr to autism. However now that I have a darling daughter of my own I am very concerned about vaccinations in general. The theory about the mmr shot is that there is a chemical in it that helps to blend the 3 vaccinations together (thimerasol). This chemical has since been removed however, some pediatricians will administer the shots separately (the m, the m and the r). My dr. however will not but he said he will send me to a doctor who will or I can hold off on giving it to her until about 2 1/2 years old (children with autism are usually diagnosed about 18 months to 2 years and the mmr is usually given at about 15 months. It is so much to think about. My dr. did give me a huge lecture on the devestating effects of these diseases were Emma to get them if I did not vaccinate. I would love to hear from parents of older children to see what their experiences have been.

My nephew has austism so I live with this condition everyday. I will say that there is NO real evidence between the MMR and austism. My college roomate is also a director at an austism school and told me that the feeling among her collegues is that the 'timing' of the shot is a total coincendence with the timing of when austism is diagnosed.
And I do agree that it is a big possiblity. She also said to be careful what you read on the Internet because anyone can post anything they want and make it look 'official'. She said parents come in all the time with 'reports' they find on the Internet and there is NO medical expert behind the report. It is simply a non-expert's opinion that is easily posted to scare parents.

I have read the CDC reports and they all conclude that the vaccine is safe. Now all that being said, and my brain knowing that vaccines are safe I am still going to hold off on this shot until after my child's 2nd birthday. I spoke with the ped's office and they said that the shots are not given individual anymore and are very expensive. In fact they told me most insurance companies will not cover the vaccine if not done in the 3-dose combo. She said that there is a pharma company that is starting to preparing a single dose shot again but that again, they have no idea if insurance companies will even cover it.

Re: Claud

Hi Karen...sorry I'm responding so late...we were out this evening, and just got home a little while ago!

Basically, my personal reasons for delaying the MMR for Paul are individual to him, and have *nothing* to do with possible (or inconclusive) links to autism.

Paul did not react well with the chicken pox vaccine a couple of months ago, and right after that episode, he had that horrible rash. I have no idea if one has anything to do with the other, but the doctors couldn't figure that out either! So, it left me feeling like the vaccine weakened his immune system a bit too much, and I just don't want to do that to him again - ESPECIALLY at this time of year (with flu season just beginning!)

Additionally, Paul's pediatrician concurred that since Paul has a SAHM and he's not in daycare at all, there is no rush to immunize him for the MMR just yet. However, if I were to go back to work and put him in daycare (even just PT), the doctor would want him to have the shot before then (which I agree with, just to be safe).

I don't think the vaccine is unsafe with the triple dose - we are all fine after receiving it when we were kids. But, for now we are waiting to give it to Paul. HTH!

Re: Claud

Oh yes, you did help!!!!

Smart thinking about flu season and a 3 shots at once!!

With all that I've read about MMR and talking to my ped nurse today she said we could wait as long as we wanted as long as she wasn't going to school (same as you ped said).

I guess any shots bother me. It killed me to watch Emma get them today. I had to hold her arm while the nurse hurt my baby and she cried. I almost cried with her!!! I feel horrible letting someone hurt my angel BUT the alternatives are MUCH worse!!!! The things we have to do as parents

Karen Call me a big sap, but I still cry everytime Paul gets a vaccine...it's just so difficult to watch them wail in pain...that cry where you cannot even hear a sound until they sukk in to breathe...horrible!
