How do you do it, and how does your dog react to it? Golem FREAKED out on us the other night when we tried cleaning his ears!! We've never had a problem in the past, we use a liquid followed by a powder that dries and the last time I claned his ears he was fine with it. Not this time!! I guess he just doesn't like it anymore, bc when we tried the other night he literally backed away from us and bared his teeth and everything! It was bad - we had to even put him in the crate bc he almost bit me. I don't know what his problem is - there is nothing wrong with his ears and any other time we can examine them and he coudn't care less. DH thinks that he's just sensitive to the liquid now and we are going to use the ear wipes instead from now on. He is normally so good while we are grooming him - nail clipping, brushing his teeth and brishing his coat too - he just bugged out for this ear cleaning.... I checked his ears to make sure there wasn't anything wrong, but he was fine. Has anyone else gone through this with thier dogs while cleaning their ears? I guess he's just really sensitive about this?

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
I've never done the ear liquid stuff - I just take a q-tip and clean out all the visible junk in his ear (you can see pretty far down there!) He doesn't like it though. As soon as he sees me coming towards him with the q-tip, he turns his head like a little kid would
Maybe Golem just doesn't like the sensation of the liquid in his ear. Do you really have to use it?

I don't think he likes the sensation at all, and I don't blame him! I never liked the liquid to begin with , but DH wanted to use it bc it was all herbal/natural stuff with no chemicals.... Well, now he finally agreed that the wipes would be better so we're going to use those from now on.
When you use the Q-Tip, is it dry or do you put any kind of cleaning solution on it? I might just try that too!

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
I just wet a q-tip with water and clean out the bell of his ear. I have to go through about 10 q-tips because there are so many little crevices in there!
Forgot to add that the breeder used a cotton ball soaked in alcohol once when she cleaned Bama's ears. I'll do that occasionally, but mostly I just use water and sometimes those dog wipes for the bigger parts of the ear.

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
Charlie's one ear always gets yucky... but not the other. I make him lie on the bed with the bad ear up and clean it with moist towelettes and q-tips. He hates it, but gets a lot of attention when I'm done.

I use a q-tip also but I am liking the cotton ball idea.

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
get him used to you touching his ears now so that he will get used to you, as well. massage his ears to relax him and then use a cotton ball. we have used to ear cleaner stuff just for dogs. the next time you go to the vet, ask him/her to demonstrate.

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
My vet told us not to use Q-tips or cotton balls. They say sometimes the cotton from each can get in their ears and aren't that good for them. I usually use a damp paper towel or baby wipes.

Hmmmm....I guess if your dog has small ears, it wouldn't be good. But Bama's ears are pretty cavernous inside There's no way that a q-tip could harm him. And the cotton ball is used for the upper part of the ear, not getting all the way down to the bottom where it might fall in. But thanks for the info!
I use a solution that I got at the vets office and I clean Murphy's ears once every 2-3 months.

Re: cleaning your dog's ears
ooh, thanks for letting me know how often you clean his ears! We're cleaning Golem's ears around the same time - every 2-3 months. I actually wasn't sure how often to do the ear cleaning, since he seems to be fine for that period of time in between, so I'm glad to hear someone else doing the same thing

It all depends on how stinky the ears are. When Murphy was a puppy he got ear infections often. So I did it every month but now his ears arent as sensitive so now its every 2-3 months.
