Clemens says yes to Astros
That was a short lived retirement....
HOUSTON -- After a month of speculation, rumors, pleas from players and the offer of an SUV, the recruiting of Roger Clemens ended on Monday, when the Houston Astros announced that they agreed to terms with the right-hander on a one-year contract.
The Astros made the announcement at a 2 p.m. CT press conference at Minute Maid Park that introduced the Houston native and six-time Cy Young winner, who decided to postpone retirement and pitch one more year, for his hometown team.
Clemens was 17-9 with a 3.91 ERA for the New York Yankees in 2004. He had more wins and strikeouts (190) than any starter in the Astros' rotation last season.
Clemens, 41, threw what he thought was his last pitch of his 20-year Hall of Fame career when he struck out Luis Castillo during Game 4 of the 2003 World Series between the Yankees and Florida Marlins. He received a standing ovation from a sold-out Pro Player Stadium crowd, was saluted by both teams and said his final goodbyes during a postgame press conference also attended by his family.
