My SIL just called to tell us that our niece has climbed out of the crib. She is 17 1/2 months old! And pretty easily too, like she scaled the side of the crib came away with no bumps! They put her back in and in 5 minutes they heard thump, then pitter patter to the door.
Her dilemna is, that she was told when they climb out usually they are ready for a bed. Well she thinks (and I agree) she may be too young for that.
Anyone have experience with this? Is there anything they can do? I guess secure the room as much as possible, DN cannot open the door yet.
I told her about those net domes for the crib, anything else work for a toddler that has no reason yet!

I would second the tents...they work excellent until the little monkeys can figure that out too..

Id move her into the bed before she hurts herself. Those dome tents may not be great cause what if she got herself tangled up in it?? Id secure the room, get a big girl bed and keep a gate on the door.

I agree if you wasnt get a toddler bed...and put a gate at the door... My nephew did the same thing and my sister got rid of his crib the same day

Patrick was climbing out of the crib about the same time. After a while he stopped doing it. I would try the net thing.

Thanks ladies! She decided to get rid of the crib and secure the room and all exits!
Where did my baby niece go? Her and Aidan are only 10 months apart!

Jordan climbed out of the crib around the same age, scared the **** out of me because he did it during the night, all we heard was a thump and crying, I moved him to a twin bed and he's been fine ever since. I used to just put up a gate at his door so he couldn't escape during the night.

My mom said I climbed out of my crib at 18 months and landed smack on my head! Thankfully I was ok but I was in a bed the very next night. I never had a toddler bed so I slept with side rails on until I could be trusted.

Re: Climbing out of Crib
I see your niece is a little monkey like my kid. Luke did it at that age too. He climbed out only a few times before we figured out we could turn the crib around but that only works if you have a crib with a high back like ours. Then he figured out yet another way to get out when he was about 20 1/2 months. Then we got a bed. We put a safety gate at his doorway (still do - nothing scarier than a toddler roaming free while everyone is sleeping) and let him do his thing. Of course took baby proofing to another level by removing anything he could potentially hurt himself with unsupervised.
I've heard of some parents leaving the side down on the crib so the baby could at least climb without having as high a drop. Ive also heard people who used the net but I didnt feel comfortable with it. I was at the park one and there was a little boy with a huge cast on his arm, the father told me he fell from the crib trying climb out so they can definitely get hurt.
