how are these paid? are we supposed to bring a checkbook to the closing for these items? obviosuly we could have a certified check prepared for the DP but since we do not know the exact closing costs fees, i am not sure how they are to be paid.

Your lawyer is supposed to give you exact amounts on what checks you have to bring that need to be certified. Ask him.
The rest of the closing fees can be paid with personal check. Bring your checkbook.

We brought our check books because the closing was at our bank we didnt need to get anything certified ahead of time, they just did it at the bank. They told us how much to write each check out for at the closing (I think we wrote like 5 checks)

Our closing was different. My lawyer called me with a lump some (closing costs and dp) and had me get a cert. check made out to the homeowner. That was the only check I wrote. The rest of the checks were written by the mortage company with the money comming out of my loan. I guess it really didnt make a differance where the $$ was comming from as long as everyone gets paid.
PS. The seller did not have a mortage on the house which might have been why they did it this way. Also he was closing on his other house the next day and needed the $ from the sale of this house to pay for the new one which might have been why he get checks from the mortage company.
