Re: CNN article
I don't think it's realistic for our area! For the few things they listed, everything wer'ree spending is at LEAST double, if not more than that and I don't think we're hvaing an extravagant wedding at all!

I agree...but that was the national average, not the new york average.

Re: CNN article
this is more accurate. When I got engaged in May 2002, everything I came across said that the AVERAGE wedding in the US was Between $14 and $17K.

Re: CNN article
thats scary but true, when my grandmother found out how much we were spending she almost fell over, 'when we got married we had 250 people sit down dinner for $2500' back in 1949 now that doesnt cover the DJ

Re: CNN article
reading this article makes me feel great about how much we're spending on ours. And the fact that we're doing it in NY where wedding costs are much higher than the Nat'l average, makes it even better!
We are keeping the guest list way down, which really helps, but there are other ways to save without impacting the overall wedding and the good time which will be had by all.
Yes you can have a DJ for under $1000 Yes you can have a great reception & CH for less than $70 a plate Yes you can find invitations for under $250
And our wedding will be awesome!

Re: CNN article
i don't think that that article gave a realistic overview of how to plan a wedding - it was more like, what NOT to do. i don't think that you should put any of your wedding expenses on credit cards, except for small deposits.
i do not anticipate spending over 25k, with the hm, and i know that we can do it.
I'd love to know where they found photo/video for $2570
ETA - the link to One Couple's Dream Wedding notes that they charged the entire wedding With all those student loans, mortgage, credit card debt & $60K in cars they decided to charge over $27K more for the wedding
That's what I can't understand, when people go into debt for a 6 hour party I was talking to two married ladies at the hair salon about this earlier and both know couples who are still paying off wedding debt 1 - 3 years later One couple has a child now and it must be very difficult to pay off wedding debt with a new baby to support.

Re: CNN article
Definitely not the NY average. My sisters wedding cost over $35 grand fifteen years ago and back then for a January wedding on a Saturday night, it was on the LOW end. Then again she had kosher catering and that generaly can add to the price.

Re: CNN article
The only category that seemed high to me was the rehearsal dinner. Over $1,000? Where do they eat? How many people attended? Ours shouldn't be nearly that high.
This does seem more accurate. Some of the numbers (photo esp.) are still low, but this is nationwide. Our area is ridiculously expensive.

It's so true, it's crazy. I can't imagine what the average cost will be within the next couple of years....It's insane!
