Co-op vs. apartment in house...

We're looking at two very different properties...there are lots of differences between what's available to buy here in London compared to NY, but I'll try to put it in NY terms. We're looking at an apartment in an apartment building (2 large bedrooms, huge living/dining area and a good sized kitchen) vs. an apartment on the ground floor of a house (1 BR, good sized living room, large kitchen/dining room, sizeable private garden in back). They're both roughly around the same price and in the same area, which is probably equivalent to a nice area in Queens or Brooklyn, one's a touch closer to transportation.

so, Co-op or apartment in house?

Does the apartment have any terraces or anything? I personally wouldn't buy anything less than a 2BR but I also wouldn't buy anything without any outdoor space. So really, I'm of no help whatsoever

BUT, if the outdoor space is not that important to you, I'd buy the 2BR. My reasoning in 1 v 2BR is that, although we're not planning on kids in the near future, anything can happen and I don't want to be put in a situation where I have to move/sell something at an already stressful time.

ETA: Also, it's much easier to sell a 2 or more BR property than it is a 1 BR.

I'm partial to the co-op becuase I hate the idea of being in someone else's house

hmmm, not too easy to find a good rental with a private garden though. Farah, what part of the London 'burbs are you looking?

I'd go for the place with 2 bedrooms as I know we'd have LOTS of visitors from the States.

I should clarify....

The 1BR is not in someone's house. It's a pretty much like a condo would be in NY - the streets here are basically lined with townhouses, like you'd find in Brooklyn or Philly or whatever, which for the most part have been converted into flats, ie private residences. This one is in a two story house, one apartment downstairs, one upstairs, and each has it's own front door. It's not anything like having an apartment in someone's house.

The one bedroom has a garden - which is the English word for 'backyard' We are only looking at 1BRs that have some outside space so that we can build on it--extend so that we can squeeze a second BR in somewhere.

Melani, we're looking mostly in the Brixton/Clapham area.
