Cocktail Hour Food to Charity?

Cocktail Hour Food to Charity?

I understand the concept of charity as I donate at my own will frequently ,however i just spoke with my reception hall & asked if the leftover food would be packed away for myself and the groom Their response was only the extra dinners( which may be 1 or 2 ). The cocktail hour food will be donated to charity. They said it is a law they can't give it to us b/c it is double heated. Has anyone heard of such a law? I want my leftover cocktail food that I am paying for! Can anybody help me with this issue?

This is true. I looked into it. You can only donate food that hasn't been served, ie, if you have no shows, you can have their dinners sent to a shelter.

ETA - WAIT - I just re-read your post and it's backwards from what I was told/did!!!!!!

DH & I DID TOTALLY had food packed up for us!!! They gave us CH food & dinners to take home. We had ASKED for the extra food from cocktail hour to be donated & we were told that it can't be sent to a shelter for the reasons of re-heating, etc...

I'm pretty sure it's matter of having the food not kept at temperature.

For instance -- I used to work at a Supermarket and we sold the roasted chickens. People would call up to have us hold 1 for them before they sold out and we couldn't b/c as soon as it's coming out of the warmer the temp changes and bacteria can start to grow.

not sure of that's the issue or not but that's all I could think of.

My RH packs 10 dinners for us to take home. The CH food can either be packed or donated.

Thanks for your responses. I was a little concerned when I was told the food could not be packaged for me , if it is a safety issue why is it okay to be packaged & donated to a charity?

I've heard different things about this.

I heard that you can't donate...you don't want people getting sick. It sure does stink since so much is left over! I will have to look into it more

My RH won't even donate the food. They say that there is a law against it, even though they have their staff serving it and the guests won't be touching it. Is this true? What are the reception halls that donate it?

I was told the same thing. It drives me nuts to think of how much food is wasted.

I have worked in food service and no place that I have worked at was ever able to donate food. The best they could do was make sure it was in a clean garbage bag and placed next to the dumpster, so local homeless were able to come and get it, but technically it was not given to them so there were no liability issues.

Wait a second and then they get a write off the money/food you paid for???...That is does seem right....(I mean yes it is very very nice but....)

It should be a choice I feel....Because I don't think they are going to put your name on the receipt they prob. use the Venues name...(and then they get a tax write off if I am not mistaken....

I would suggest talking to them and donating the food to a charity you want to ya know?!?And putting your name to it....

Do I make sense?
