I'm having just a piano player during cocktail hour, maybe that would be more economical? Sometimes you can even find a college student or what not to do it.

last wedding i went to was at Jericho Terrace, and i dont remember any music at the cocktail hour, i dont think its necessary...the food was great though! i think people will be more concerned with what they eating, then having music

Maybe you can ask your hall if they have speakers set up - you might be able to just play a mixed cd in the background on low and you could make it yourself.
I know some rooms in the fox hollow do this.

My hall said that if i wanted i could bring a CD or an i-pod and they would hook it up and play it for the CH. Maybe you can ask about that

Re: cocktail hour music AND ceremony music
I'm having a piano player for the ceremony and CH. I really wanted it for the CH because there is a baby grand piano in the room and it was only a little bit more for the ceremony. But I do like how the prerecorded music works for the ceremony.
ETA: $200 is a lot though. It's a half hour ceremony and the music isn't playing the entire time either.

No i don't think that you need music at your CH. People are going to to eating and talking to eachother. I don't think that they would even notice. HTH.

Yeah, Ch was included in mine and my DJ 'threw in' the ceremony music. Another DJ wanted $200 for it...

Re: cocktail hour music AND ceremony music
CH and ceremony music is just sooo nice to have during both. Is your CH 2 hours or 1? If you are into having music for that then go for it, you dont want to regret it later on

Re: cocktail hour music AND ceremony music
Did you try to negotiate with the DJ? I got my DJ to throw it in for the cocktail hour. Always negotiate. theyd rather give you a discount or thrw something in than to lose a client.

Re: cocktail hour music AND ceremony music
$200 a piece for CH and ceremony is a little ridiculous. maybe try to negotiate with them. but worse comes to worse, music at ch is completely optional. noone will miss it. they'll be too busy eating. but i would check with your reception hall to see if they have loud speakers in the room for you to hook something up to. or hire a live musician to play...doesn't have to be a three string orchestra...maybe even someone to play acoustic guitar for an hour or the piano. just some ideas.
