cocktail hr music ??

We are thinking of skipping music at the cocktail hr...is this strange or tacky? Our ceremony is at the hall so one thing will flow into the next...any advice?

We had our band use a 2-piece for the cocktail hour. The cost was minimal. But you don't have to have music at that time.

My DJ includes the cocktail hour into the cost. I am also being married 'on location'. I figured I'd have them play music that's good and happy, but not something danceable.

I was going to skip it altogether, but I have a wide range of people showing up who won't know eachother at all. So since it's included anyhow, it makes sense, for me, to have music to drown out the silence.

I am glad you asked this question because I was wondering the same thing. Is it weird not to have some sort of music during the cocktail hour? Our cocktail hour is 1 1/2 hours and our band isn't playing until the reception. I'm not sure about what to do.

My band through in a keyboard for the cocktail hour and then we added a sax for a minimal price. But while I think it is a nice touch - I do not think it is neccesary.

I went to a wedding once where thee was NO music at the coctail hour. Even though it was many years ago, I remember it so clearly because it was SO quiet. Go for the music, scrimp somewhere else.

I am also getting married at the hall. My DJ package includes cocktail hour and ceremony music, if I need it. But I liked the idea of having a pianist for my ceremony, so I am keeping him for cocktail hour also. I believe for an 1 1/2 hours it was approximately $200, I would have to check my contract though. And he starts the music while people are showing up to the ceremony, so its about 2 hours. I personally think it is nice to at least have some background music. You should ask your DJ/Band, maybe they will add someting for you.

My DJ contract included music for the cocktail hour too. We also got married on location so it was a flat rate for ceremony music, cocktail hour, and recpetion. (6 hours)

We had our band play a 2-piece during cocktail as well. You don't need music but maybe you can ask the hall to play some light background music if you wanted it.

I'd suggest having some music. Silence can be deafening, you know? We had our DJ play 30s/40s Big Band music sort of softly in tbe background. I loved it.

Are you having a band or a DJ? I only ask because most DJ's include it.

We're having 3 pieces from our band play during CH - it was worked into the package along with 3 different pieces during the ceremony (we're also getting married at the reception hall).

I don't think it's strange to NOT have music at the CH...but I do think it's a nice touch. Like someone else mentioned, it can fill in any awkward silences.

We weren't going to have anyone play because our cocktail room has a player piano, however, my DJ charges for 5 hours of music so they will have a small system set up in the cocktail room.

To answer your question...we are having a DJ and he could do th CH for an additional $250 and he was going to throw in the ceremony music free if we needed it ONLY if we booked him for the CH.....
so looks like we have some thinking to do.....
thakns for all your input girls!!

I'm having my DJ simply put a CD on. It may sound eerie if it's too quiet. A bit of 'noise' makes people feel comfortable and hopefully will add to the feeling that it's a 'celebration.'

Re: cocktail hr music ??

you know what else I think? i think that CH music sets the mood for the kind of party you want, even if it does it subliminally. like i said above, we had 40s big band music and it was jumpy and dancy. very upbeat. but we had it only as background music. i think subliminally it got people in the mood to dance, and once the reception started, we couldn't drag people off the dance floor, including DH and me!
