Cocktail reception vs. full seated dinner

Original post by jmumass00

Has anyone been to or had a wedding reception with just heavy passed horsdourves (sp?) and stations instead of a full seated dinner?
Everyone always says the cocktail hour is the best part.
My mom thinks it would look cheap to not have a seated dinner.
Any thoughts??

I also looked into this, because I thought since I am getting married during the day, who wants to sit down for a full dinner, and I thought it would save money. Anyway, alot of places do offer this, but it ends up being the same price!!! And one place told me that they would set up carving station in the reception room, but then it would limit the space I have for guests. So I just opted for the full sitdown dinner.

They do this at the Bourne Mansion too. dk's wife (Cheryl) had a cocktail reception there.

I think it's an awesome idea, but I would somehow specify it on your invite that it is a cocktail reception or via word of mouth. I have heard that there a few wackos out there that don't eat a lot at the CH bc they are waiting for a dinner - and it never comes!!

Where is your reception if you don't mind my asking? I'm still hunting for places!!! I need ideas.

I am doing it - and I am very excited about it. It suits our style and the 'feel' we wanted for our wedding.

If your crowd is young and small, I think it is an awesome idea.

Personally, I always hate the part where i have to find my seat and make conversation with my table - I would much rather keep on talking and drinking and mingling...

This was posted a long time ago, but I definitely agree. FH and I are doing this for our wedding at BYC and they mirror the stations on both sides, so it is less crowded. It is actually the same price either way. We want more of a party atmosphere and hate to be told when to 'find your seat,' especially when you are just getting started!! As for the old people, IMO the wedding is for you, not your guests. They will deal!!

I like the seated dinner. I have never seen or heard of someone doing the cocktail reception. I'm sure it can be pulled off. I just never heard of it! Good Luck!

We are doing a cocktail reception because I always felt that the party never really gets started until after dinner. When guest arrive for the first 45 min they will pass signature drinks and there will be a cheese and veggie platter out then they will be passing horderves and after we do our first dance they will open up the stations and continue to pass horderves. For dessert we are doing the cake and candy table and the waiters will be passing cigars and bon bons on the trays! I'm really excited and looking forward to it. Its all about what YOU want and what is reflective of your personalityand what makes you happy!! Good luck!

I think this is a great idea. I would love to attend a wedding like this! I'm not doing it because the old schoolers between our two families would freak. I would say to just be sure there are enough servers with trays in proportion to the number of guests.
