hello. anyone else get flack about what they majored in or what career they want? i am a psych major (i graduate this may from st joes). i am considering applying to school psych grad programs (locally and in NC bc we would like to relocate there bc there bc fi parents are moving, its much cheaper to live tere than on LI, and i think there would be more jobs for me after i graduate). anyways, i get flack for the major i chose bc even after i graduate with a masters its so super competative to get a job. i keep hearing this from my fi's mother and fi has brought it up too. but hello!!! its a little late to switch majors, and if this is what i want to do then i am gonna do it! just needed to vent. i am stressed out enough about my job future i don't need to hear others harp about it lol. my worst fear is a getting a degree i can't use! ~lacey

Re: college major
I work at Stony Brook, and psych is the most popular undergrad major. Running joke is that a psych major walked into the career center and asked what her major prepared her for...The counselor said, 'You can work at the mall with the rest of them.'
Anyway, all kidding aside, a bachelor's degree is good to have whether or not you continue for your grad degrees (though if you want to work in the psych field you probably need a PhD anyway).

Re: college major
Hi! I am in the school-clinical psychology Psy.D. program at Pace University. I have my M.S.Ed. in school psychology. School psychology is one area in psych where you can certainly work with your masters degree. Long Island is competitive for jobs, but if you look in NYC and the surrounding areas, there is always a need for school psychologists. Good luck!

Re: college major
I'm with you on that one. Not with psych, but on a degree in a very competetive field. I'm about tog raduate with my BA in 'Creative Studies: Theatre Arts' or something like that. And I want to go for my MFA. I'm also so afriad of getting 2 degrees that don't really guarantee anything and may advance my career, but it's alreadya competetive field. But as Jackie said you can definitely work in a school. There may be some great opportunities in those new smaller high schools they're opening up throughout NYC, and when you go for your Master's you're going to make amny many more connections and meet many more people who will give you more ideas and hopefully open more doors for you. But you may decide to go on to the PhD also. Good Luck! I just wanted to let you know, I feel your pain!
