Just wondering if Columbus day is a day most people get off from work? I know post office/schools are closed but do most jobs typically give that Monday off? The industry I work in we're always closed on Monday and FH usually has off but they get a lot of holidays so we don't want to just go by that. The venue we want to book has either Fridays or that Sunday (10/11/15)in the time frame we're looking at, and with FH's reservations about a Friday wedding I'm wondering if that Sunday would be the way to go. Thanks girls! Can't wait until I can finally write that 'Venue Booked!!!' post!

It depends on the job. I don't get off on Columbus Day at my current job. My last company was a Jewish company and had off on the Jewish holidays (a few of them are in September and October) and Christian holidays (and got out early on Fridays).
My sister and her husband had a Monday wedding (they were both off that day from their jobs) and lots of people made it, even though it was not a day off.

My cousin had a Sunday night wedding over columbus day wedding. Not many people left early. In fact FH had to be up at 5 am and we still stayed the whole night. People can be tired at work for one day. I say go for it!

It really depends upon the job and their policy.
When I worked for the Post Office, and my current job, we had off. My previous job and others before we had to work.
Your guests might be able to take the day as a vacation day, but if money is tight and they need to work that day or it's a new job, they might not be able to make it.
I'm getting married on a Saturday and some of my cousins can't make it, and I gave them almost a year notice.
Do what is best for you. Good Luck.

It's nice of you to think of other people when planning your wedding, but remember that you have to throw a party you can afford, if Sunday is the way to go, then do that! The people who want to be there, will be there, regardless of what day it is! I've been to a few Sunday weddings when the next day wasn't a holiday, and mostly everyone stayed until the end. You're planning way in advance, so even if people wanted to take the next day off from work, they'll have plenty of notice. Do what works for YOU!

Really varies by job. I know my dad never gets off for Columbus Day and my brother doesn't get it off either.

The current trend is most companies are opening up Columbus Day and giving people the day after thanksgiving off.. This is in the corporate world..other places like post office banks, school closed cuz it's a legal holiday where as day after Thanksgiving is not.

I work in a law firm and even though most courts are closed, our office is still open for Columbus Day. Plan your wedding for you, what ever works best for you and your FH is when you should book it. I'm getting married Labor Day and FH was worried about people not coming because of the holiday. We haven't even sent out invites yet and I am hearing about oot'ers that we weren't expecting to come, booking their hotel rooms!

The federal reserve is closed so most banks/finance jobs will be closed along with any schools and county/state/federal offices. My dad is a steam fitter and his union is ALWAYS off for holidays, but not Columbus Day. Labor Day is a holiday where a lot more people are likely to have off. Or Memorial Day if you're thinking maybe spring.
We were looking into doing the exact same thing you're thinking of and would have done it if it had saved us money. But most of the places we went wanted to charge Saturday night prices for that Sunday night or Labor Day Sunday. Instead we went with a Friday night. If you can get a great deal, I say go for it!
ETA: my dad also reminded me that your guests will have added expenses on holiday weekends.. Higher prices for travel, hotels, etc. and more traffic. But those who want to be there will be there. Whether you make it Sunday of Columbus Day or a random Tuesday lol

Thanks guys, you've all given me something to think about! rcotter - the price for that Sunday is $5 pp less than a Saturday - which helps of course, but isn't anything that makes me say WOW! However, the September Friday we were looking at ( which also happens to be FH's birthday) would be $25 less pp than a Saturday, which obviously is pretty sweet. So it's a matter of picking the lesser of two evils I guess, having potentially tired guests because they worked Friday or guests who have work Monday...I also agree about the holiday travel, we do have a number of town guests coming. I work both Friday and Saturday so pretty much any event I go to I've worked all day/week and if the environment is fun I've had a great time regardless. Decisions decisions!

Re: Columbus Day?
So I decided on 10/11/15 and I saw all angles of the decision. For my venue, Saturday was too expensive so my two options were Friday or Sunday. I went to about 8 weddings last year and I have to say as a guest I rather have off all day and get ready for a wedding and enjoy it rather than rushing out of work to get there(rush hour is insane) I'm in the retail industry and EVERYONE works in retail but most people have off and people who have odd schedules can always rearrange it. Pick the day you and FH want, good luck in deciding, keep us updated, we could be wedding day twins!

I have never gotten off for Columbus Day. I work in a hospital. You just need to know your guests.....I have lots of family/friends who also work in healthcare, so this would never work for me. But, if you have lots of teachers/government employees, go for it!
