Just get a Mac.

Oh, parts never die on Macs? Or I'd have to pay for a mac technician to replace a power supply for $200...

PC / Mac debate never ends! (not a mac hater though, I think it's ok)

Re: Computer problem. Question

I am a senior computer network guy at my job.

If you identified the burning smell came from the power supply (good job)... then you probably just have a blown power supply. They are definitely breakable.

Its highly UNLIKELY that you also fried the motherboard and video card. I have fried a few power supplies in my time. Never fried a motherboard.

Buy the power supply (they are cheap)... and see if that works.

Ill tell you right now... if you have to replace the motherboard on the computer... you WILL have to re-install the entire operating system. If you don't you will be asking for plenty of lockups and crashes galore. More trouble than its worth.

Hey well...My friend called me Saturday night to tell me that the motherboard he was going to install was friend too. Since the pc is 3 years old, they do not make that mother board anymore...So I had to upgrade. I know have a new mother board, 256MB DDR memory and they reinstalled windows XP Professional, which I had before. He was able to save all my documents and pictures, but not my music files...which is fine.

That was the good news, the bad news is that it is costing me $300.
