Computer Question - Help

Danielle and I just got optimum online installed on our computer in our new apartment and we also got optimum voice. I have a router and I cannot hook it up to the new modem for some strange reason. Does anyone here have a router hooked up to a computer with optimum voice? We have a Motorola SBV4200 Modem.

How do I go about hooking up the router?
Thanks,
Scott

Your computer needs an ethernet port I believe. Does your computer have this? You cannot use USB with this router I think.

Re: Computer Question - Help

when the tech was there he should have put the ethernet wire from the back of the ov modem to the computer, unplug it from the back of the computer plug it into the back of the router, then connect another ethernet wire from one of the ports(labeled 1-4) on the back of the router to the computer. install the router software, you should be good to go.

If not try clicking on network connections in the start menu and renewing the ip address.

Were you able to get online before you hooked up the router?

K, FH is telling me this:

1 Unplug power to the modem (make sure it's off for at least a minute!)
2 Unplug power to the router
3 Have ethernet cable going from modem to the internet or wan port of router
4 Put power to modem
5 Wait for 4 solid green lights
6 Power up router

That should do it!

Mike thanks...I wasnt there while the installers were there. They didnt touch my old modem at all. When I got home from work, I found it still plugged in. I had the router on the computer before we moved to the apartment we are in now, and before we had the optimum voice installed. I am going to have my friend come by sometime this week to take a look at it. I wont feel safe until it is installed. Right now I have a sygate Firewall program installed but thats not good enough for me. I want my router back up and running.
Thanks,
Scott

he didnt hook up the ov modem for you?? i would call customer svc and tell them he didnt complete the job and you need to have someone come back to hook it up for you. just disconnect the router, because the techs are not allowed to hook the modem up to the router. then once its up and running hook it up to the router.

No why would he hook the old modem up? He replaced the old modem with the new modem that has the jack for the phone line. Danielle said they were here for over an hour...They had to go into every room and do a lot of wiring and stuff.....

all you should have to do then is unplug the ethernet wire going from the ov modem to the computer plug in into the wan port on the back of the router then with another ethernet cable plug it into one of the ports labeled 1-4. reboot the modem by unplugging in for like 5sec and do the same with the router.

when i said he didnt hook up the ov modem i was talking about the new optimum voice modem.

What kind of wiring did he have to do? is this a second phone line in the home? Or do you not have a telephone jack in the room where the computer is?

The people that used to live there left the place a mess and the wires were shot...He rewired alot of what used to be there...He had a lot of work to do...He also told us that one of the cable wires were moist...That means we have some dampness in the apartment...The pleasures of basement living lol

Re: Computer Question - Help

If he hooked up the Optimum modem to the computer and it was working fine. If you want to now install the router... you MUST turn off the optimum modem for at least a few minutes to clear its stored information. It stores the information of the computer (its MAC address) and when you make a device change (either get a new computer or hook up a router) you are giving the optimum modem a new MAC address to connect to so the modem must be reset in this case.

Sometimes the cable modem 'knows' that the equipment changed so it has to request a new address. Other times it doesnt and it won't work.

Whenever I change hardware... i always reboot the cable modem just to be sure.
