Conference at NYU Medical Center: Reproductive Mental Health
I work at NYU and saw a brochure for the following conference. It sounds interesting and I thought some of the moms and to-be moms might be interested (it might also be of interest to any woman who wants to learn how their hormones affect mood):
See: www.med.nyu.edu/cme for more info
Target Audience
Health care professionals and consumers with an interest in women's mental health are invited. Psychiatrists, obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians, and internists, as well as nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, social workers, and psychologists will have an opportunity to acquire state-ofthe art information.
Course Description
This is the 3rd annual NYU half-day course in Reproductive Psychiatry, a subspecialty that focuses on psychiatric disorders which present at specific points in a woman's reproductive life cycle. These conditions include premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), mood changes in perimenopause and menopause, and psychiatric disorders in pregnant and postpartum women. Various treatment options will be discussed, including the latest information on medications in pregnant and breastfeeding women and hormonal therapies across the life cycle. Our internationally-known faculty will present the most up-to-date information available in a format that appeals to healthcare providers and sophisticated healthcare consumers.
Mission Statement
The Post-Graduate Medical School of the New York University School of Medicine is committed to improving patient care through continuing medical education. This mission is fulfilled through seminars, workshops, interactive online courses, and regularly scheduled conferences.
Educational Objective
This course is designed to educate medical professionals and the general public about Women's Reproductive Mental Health, thereby reducing the fear, ignorance, and prejudice that prevent many women from obtaining the help they need to achieve emotional wellbeing.
Expected Outcome
At the conclusion of this course, participants will understand the hormonal changes that occur across the lifecycle in women; be able to recognize symptoms of mood disorders related to the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, pregnancy, and postpartum; be familiar with current treatment options including psychotherapy and psychopharmacology; and be able to share this information with friends, family, patients, and other medical professionals.
