confession: I have newsphobia

confession: I have newsphobia

Lately, I've noticed that I can't even be in the same room if the news is on TV, and I always skim the news section of the morning paper. Sometimes I can manage to look at the Yahoo news or the CNN website, but usually not.

I like to be well-informed about politics and current events, but lately I just don't want to hear about what's going on. I feel guilty about that, but so much of the news makes me feel sick and angry. I'm getting to be like my grandma, who can only handle the goofy 'human interest' stories!

Anyone else having this problem? It's getting to the point where I'm actually getting my news from _The Daily Show_!

I used to be addicted to CNN until I met LIW.
The rest is history.

Actually a LOT of people get their news from TDS (The Daily Show)

Having humor tell the news makes it less edgy. It's tough right now because I feel everything in the media is SERIOUSLY tainted. It's not to say its untrue, just not said objectively (i think thats the right word)

In other words its not WHAT they say it's HOW they say it. At one point I was so frustrated I said if the news found out a cat died, they'd report it as a mysterous death and probably blame some neighbor and have them arrested for animal cruelty only to later find out the cat was just aging and not really a big deal.

The news, for me, has gotten WAY out of hand.

Jon Stewart is a good alternative. But I find myself popping onto the BBC & CNN every now and then and a lady at my office is from the middle east and so she gives me updates from their morning news as well. I kinda get a three sided view of current events.

Yes, EXACTLY. Part of what I hate about the news is the DRAMA. Even the local news seems hellbent on scaring people to death: 'Is your shampoo giving you brain cancer? Find out at 10' or 'What you don't know CAN hurt you. Film at 11.' Yes, there's a lot to be alarmed about these days, but the news only amps up the anxiety and makes things worse, I think.

The BBC is less painful for me than most American news programs, definitely.

And I have a wee crush on Jon Stewart AND Stephen Colbert.

We are living in troubling days which makes it only more normal to crave escape.

I do read/watch the news but it gets more difficult by the day.

i used to be a news junkie and then came LIW ...

i watch PBS - the News Hour and Now with Bill Moyers. i'll also watch the BBC.

i used to watch CNN but i can't anymore, Fox makes me vomit...

i get the Times on the weekend and watch the Sunday morning shows.

late night i'll try to stay up for Charlie Rose, but if i'm not interested in the guests i always flip to the Daily Show...

i don't like the state of the world right now AT ALL, and therefore decided to bury myself in wedding planning instead!

I really don't like the news!! I am forcing myself to listen to 1010am, because I don't have a clue with whats going on! The news can be a scary thing in a time like this! I also think it puts a lot of un-needed ideas in peoples heads!!

Re: confession: I have newsphobia

I find myself getting news from 2 sources..

1.) MSNBC
2.) The Oddly Enough Section of Yahoo News

Those stories are great from Oddly Enough -

I remember a few and I send them out to friends as 'important' news.. LOL

1.) A crow that was captured by German town officials by giving it a large plate of alcohol and getting it drunk to the point where it passed out and slept off it's hangover.

Sounds like an almost human type crow.

2.) Another story from Germany where a Bishop received pornographic materials on VHS instead of religious ones and of course.. these materials were dispensed to his congregation. Of course.

3.) The Penis Snatcher from a Third World country got beat up by a mob. Nuff said.

Most of the real bizarre stuff seems to come from England and Germany.

Cheerio!
