I am sooo confused about this! I might start writing my shot list/ must takes for my photogrpaher- just jot them down as I think of them so I have it when it comes time to give him the list. So I figured i would write things like Bride and Groom with grooms parents Bride and groom with brides parents bride and groom with grooms grandparents etc. But am I supposed to tell him detailed shots I want like me looking out the window? or like mine and FH's hands together with rings? Stuff like that? A friend told me I should be more specific and do the latter. But isn't it rude to tell a photogrpaher who you hire how to shoot the photos? Don't you hire them cus you trust their phtoto skills? Im just not sure if they would expect something like this or if they prefer it and whatnot.

I don’t think it’s rude…if there’s a picture you spefically want, I think the photog would appericate you letting them know. My photographer actually mentions this list in her contract. Maybe yours does too?

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
The thing is that I dont really want to be that specific- I hired them cus they are a good photogrpaher and am hoping that they have snese enough to get all the good moments that happen. But should I not assume this and give them more details?

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
I think that it would be fine to create the must have checklists... I'm going to put them in two groups: People and Mood.
My people list is just the combinations of who I want to take pictures with, breaking it down to specifically who. Like, I want a picture with my mother, first cousins and my aunts (all women), I'll write that down.
The Mood would include the different flower arrangments, my dress, the room, etc.
If there is a specific pose you want, you should write it down... and when you sit with the photographer, convey to him the amount of flexibility he/she has with getting everything on the photo list.

I would give them a list of all the posed shots that you want but leave all of the photojournalistic ones up to their discretion. That way you get the poses you want and they get to be creative. Do you mind if I ask what photographer you booked with? FH and I are looking right now and I figure we have the same taste in halls so maybe we have the same taste in photographers

I think you are fine if you went in there with a list or even start compiling samples from the brides review and print them out. I have seen on some photogs web sites that they do not look at must take lists, so make sure yours does. But if so, I think it is a great idea...I have some ideas in my album.

I think thats what Im gonna do- cus i figure you can't recreate someone elses natural moment- itll just look awkward. And I figure Ill have my own natural moments that a photogrpaher should be able to catch on their own. I hope Im not wrong to assume this- thats why we booked them! Haha.
We are using Andreas Rentsch. FH and I just love his work!!
Try looking at www.wpja.com as well. There are a TON of amazing photojournalists on that site in all different price ranges.

Yeah, I guess I should have added that so far I only plan on having one pic on the must take list: that of me, my cousin who is 16 and a BM and my other cousin who will be around 4---we all look exactly alike, so I would just like one photo where all three of us are together. Besides that, I trust my photog’s photojournalistic style!

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
Like I def want me and FH with certain famioly members- but thats more for the traditional pics. but I feel like I would be insulting him if I said i need me looking out the window with my hand behind my back- type of description...

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
i had the same issue!!! i first wrote out all the must take family shots (ie: i wanted to make sure i got a pic of me & my gramma, etc.)...then i wrote some detailed specifics (ie: pic from the back of church of us up at the alter, photo of our hands etc.) then i actually printed out some photos(not a lot - just some) that i wanted to try & recreate....he was actually really happy that i did that, and he did re-creat the photos!(as long as they weren't candid obviously that would be hard to do lol). ANYWAYS, i dont think anything is rude or insulting. YOUR paying HIM for your day!

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
Here's what I did:
1. My photographer gave me a list of the basic wedding party pictures and we checked off the ones we wanted (ie: groom and bridal party, bride and groom with grandparents, etc...)
2. I created a list of shots I wanted (ie: when we are cutting the cake I want a picture of us looking at the camera and cutting the cake)
3. I then attached a bunch of pictures that I got off this site and said that I wanted to re-create them.
Hope this helps!!!

Thanks for the info. I checked out the site and his pics are amazing. He really captures the moment. I think you could give a list of family potraits you want and leave the rest up to him.

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
Just remember that all of the group shots tend to take forever--people drift off--you get pulled aside etc., so the more shots you have planned for your photographer, the less spontaneous your shots will be. DH and I really wanted a sot of the two of us walking down the street from our reception because we live a few blocks away. It is the only shot I requested.

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
yes, do let your photographer know what shots your looking for, but don't be too dissapointed if they don't turn out...sometimes the timing is off, the lighting, ect, to what you had in mind. I had a mob tell me she wanted a dipping pose, but the bride was so uncomfortable, that it just looked awkward...
The more the photographer knows about you and what you want, the better they can document your day.

Re: confused about shot list/ must take photos
If any shots are REALLY important to you, you should write them down.
