We were told the maitre d 'gratuity' was not included with the 18% gratuity for rest of staff and it was a suggested $2-3 per person. ok fine - but then they asked us to drop that off with our final payment and kept referring to it as a fee. We did that too but i'm confused because at our appointment they said we should give $1 per person or whatever on the day of wedding for a 'job well done'. Over $400 in a cash tip seems crazy to me. I mean what could they possibly have to do for us besides the obvious - direction etc... So for a party of 200 people - the maitre d gets $500-600 as a tip??????????

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
oh i had to give my hall 450 which included everyone.. it seems like a lot but when you think about it , it is not. well for my hall at least.
just bring like 300 extra not saying you will use it all but bring it just in case you want to hand some more money out to certain people like the dj, photo ect

I have never heard of dropping off the tip before the actual event - that sounds weird to me. And then to give another tip on top of the tip is weird too! Why wouldn't they just tell you to tip around $4 a person rather then $2-3 and then an additional dollar?
It is crazy how much money these people get, but I used to work in a catering hall, and I will be very honest with you, they really do a lot of work for your party! The make sure the bride and groom are very happy, everything runs on time, the CH is amazing, the kitchen gets everything out perfect, and the staff is on top of EVERYTHING! Should they get that much money for doing their job, well that is another story, but they really do work very hard!!!!!

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
thanks. we were charged
18% gratuity $550 House Charge
Maitre D gratuity s minimum $2 per person (which we gave). Bridal Attendant gratuity is min. $50
Then we are supposed to also give additional on the night of for a 'job well done'. Isnt that the point of the $2 per person = $400. I doubt every person needs more than $2 worth of special attention that night??

i wouldn't have paid it in advance, i would've REFUSED...and i would've told them taht a tip is just that, a tip and youwill pay them what you deem worthy.
ok....i feel a slight rant coming on, bear with me...do they realize that when they do ti this way, they are decreasing what you'd freely give? it's like when you go to eat with a large group and they add the 1.50 tip to your check...well, now you get 1.50....before you were getting 5, but you told me what to tip you... it's understandable when it's ONE BIG check...but individuals...i've seen waiters write in that your tip is 90 cents...are you kidding? you had a good shot at a whole dollar...but you just told them you only deserve 90 cents...

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
you are absolutely right! we were just so caught up in everything else and i honestly do prefer not to need to worry about us having to pay anything that night - i want to relax and enjoy my party.
I just think that $2 is more than enough and was shocked that they actually say to also tip that night for a 'job well done'. FH is always too quick to dig into his pocket when he's giddy.

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
I would just give the 2-3 and thats it...If these BM work so hard..why arent they paid more by the hall...they are working for the hall not me.. I am hiring the hall to do a service...they employ the staff...a tip is fine...but the line must be drawn somewhere... if a BM works 3 nights in a weekend and get 500 from each night thats 1500 a week times 52 weeks. that almost 80,000 of untaxed money (if my math is correct) on top of there salary.. I know this is the extreme and there is the low season and all...but I am just trying to make a point...

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
Our DOC told us to tip $250 for our 140 guests.
That's what we did, at the end of the night.

Re: Confused re Maitre D tip?
Dont know if this helps or makes it more confusing but....
in my contract we have of course, the normal 18% gratuity, plus a seperate charge of $3 pp as the maitre d FEE. Ladies here have told me they think that the $3pp is his tip being calculated beforehand. I plan giving him an additional tip the day of depending upon how much I think he deserves.
As it stands, if we have 120 ppl he is getting a $360 tip. He may earn $100-$150 more day of.....
