So I haven't been to many weddings and don't really know what the protocol for registries are. I always thought they were just for the bridal shower, but when I look at articles online they keep mentioning them as the actual wedding gifts. So are the registries for the bridal shower or the wedding?
My fiance doesn't think doing a registry is a good idea. He would prefer for people to give us cash gifts on our wedding day so it can help pay for some of the expenses. I feel the same way, but on the other hand we have absolutely nothing for our new apartment because we currently do not have our own place. What should we do???

Re: confusion about registry
registries are for showers, engagement parties AND weddings ...
i agree that i prefer cash as opposed to gifts, but some people prefer to give gifts and, in that case, you want to get the things you want/need rather than have them guess

Re: confusion about registry
I think in alot of states outside of New York people give gifts instead of money at Weddings....Ive only seen ;money given at Weddings in New York and Bridal Registries for the shower.

Re: confusion about registry
In NY most people give money for the wedding and the registry is used only for the shower. In other parts of the country where it is more common to give gifts instead of money, the registry is used. I know the registry websites will talk about wedding gifts, but for the most part you can just ignore that - keep in mind the same website/forms are used all over the country. Chances are you're going to get money for the wedding. But you should register anyway so that you get exactly what you want for your bridal shower!

Re: confusion about registry
Yes, I should have added that most people will give money regardless of the fact that you have a registry ... but still, some people like giving gifts, not cash.
