anybody live (or know somebody who lives) in Connecticut?? I'm curious as to how it is compared to the Island. Obviously everything is ridiculously expensive in NY. I wonder how the living is over there (owning a house and such). Is it less, the same, more??
Me & FH were considering making a move in that direction, but havent done any real research yet. Just wondering.

I think it depends where you live in Conn. Obviously the closer you are the the city (NY) the more expensive it is. My cousin lives in New Fairfeild which is a sweet area. House are priced similar to here and well as the taxes. I think Conn is pricey but you may be able to find any area further north in Conn that is less expensive.

I live in Connecticut for the past 18months...FH got a job up here so we moved. So basically, most of Fairfield county is VERY EXPENSIVE!! I would put the house prices in comparsion to living on the North Shore of Long Island.
But we live in New Haven County...right on the Fairfield border, we are currently looking at homes under $300k...not huge houses but cute capes, great school district and about .50 acres of property. Taxes are about the same as Long Island.
The thing with CT is that, in most towns there are little pockets of bad areas. So you have to be careful. I used to work in the city and commute from Milford (second to last stop on Metro North) I couldn't do it, its really tough. It was almost 2 hours door to door. Plenty of jobs up here, pays the same as the city too which is great.
FM me if you want more info.

Thanks for that info!! I'm gonna notebook this and definitely write you once me & FH start needing to make some real decisions. I wanna be as close to home as possible (my whole family lives here on the Island) but i just don't think we can afford it. So somewhere close by would be nice

Re: Connecticut?
My brother lives in Conn, hes in New Fairfield. Its nice, but I think its a little too country for my taste. He has about an acre of land and deer in his backyard all the time. You don't want to live in Danbury, they have a nice hospital but other than that, its not the greatest area.

We're looking in Milford, bc its on the Fairfield border, great town....it has everything you could possibly need like mall, target, costco, etc.
But the best part is, its like 20mins to the bridgeport ferry so I am really close to my family.

that sounds awesome! But how expensive is that compared to Long Island?? Somebody above said that Fairfield is expensive. How's Milford? If it's not significantly lower than Long Island, I probably couldn't do it. But that does sound so ideal to me. I REALLY wanna be as close to home as possible.

Agreed. I work in Stamford CT and have a friend that lives in New Fairfield and works in Stamford and it takes her over an hour by car ANd the house pricing is the same as LI and so are the taxes. I have another friend in Bethel (prettyclose to Danbury) and I believe it's comparable to LI.

Re: Connecticut?
Honestly I think anywhere in the tri-state area will be fairly expensive with taxes simlar to those on LI...espcially in the 'nicer' areas.
My old boss used to live in CT...but I past New Haven so she took the train to the last stop and then travelled another 30-45 min. by car. Another co-worker lived in Fairfiled and loved it but complained about high taxes. Another friend commuted from New Haven to the city and hated it so her and her FH moved to the city.
Good luck!
What happened with moving to Colorado??

Oh, we definitely are moving to Colorado, but that's just for about a year or two. Neither of us wanna stay there. We're just waiting for him to finish up school and such and then we're coming right back to NY. But lately I've been rethinking it. I don't want us to live here if it's gonna be so horrible and stressful to own a house. But not matter what, I'm fully set on leaving Co as soon as possible!! I'd like to be driving distance from the Island though. FH is all against New Jersey and I'm not sure how i feel about Pa. Ct would be ideal, but like I said earlier, if it's not a significant price drop then it's not worth it. Might as well just be on the Island.

Re: Connecticut?
It just really depends on where in CT you are and where you are working. If you work in NYC, then I would say don't move here bc if you live within driving/train distance to NYC, its the same if not mroe than LI. But I work in New Haven, so I can buy something a little further up and its ALOT less than LI.

Re: Connecticut?
I grew up in CT, having lived there for 18+ years. AS most posters have said, the closer to NYC you are the $$$ it is going to be.
I grew up in a town called Shelton which was right on the Fairfield County-New Haven County line and it is about the same as LI. I liked it though because there is soooo much more space than here on LI. You might get the same size house but an acre of land to go with it.
Keep in mind the more north you go, the more 'country' it seems. And the more east, the more 'ocean/sailing' feel there is. Just some things to keep in mind. I would definitely consider it...
