Converters - 110 (US) volt to 220 (european) volt

Do they make converters for plugs to use American voltage in a European outlet? I have to go to Frankfurt for business next week and I really want to bring my Lost DVDs and laptop with me so I can catch up on some more episodes but I'd obviously need to charge the laptop. Does anyone know if this exists and, if so, where I can get it and is it super expensive?

You can get them in radio shack. You will need the voltage convter and a plug adapter since their outlets are different. I don't think it is all that expensive. I think I paid about $20 bucks for the converter and a few bucks for the plugs.

ETA - Your laptop might be dual voltage already, in that case you would only need the plug adapter.

Thank you!! I just spoke to DH and that's what he said about the laptop too!

Do you think the converter would work for my hairdryer? I'm sure the answer's no but I figured I'd ask. I'm going to look terrible the whole week if I have to use their dinky hotel dryer

I think they will work and I know the laptop will work because we brought ours on our honeymoon (transferred pics to the computer every night).

Are you going to Frankfurt Book Fair? How exciting!

Just check that your hairdryer plug will fit into the adaptor - on one of our adaptors, we had to get an extension to get it to work but I think that is the UK one.

You guys just made my day! I had visions of a big puff ball coming off my head while trying to talk to customers

Juliet - yes I am! That's funny that you knew that, so few people around me have a clue about publishing. I've managed to skate around going for the past 5 years so I guess my time is up

Just be careful with the hairdryer - I brought one on my honeymoon to England, and everywhere we stayed seemed to say not to use anything with more then a certain amount of volts(or watts, I can never remember) - and my hairdryer was like 1875, (more then they said was ok). So, I don't think I ever used it for fear I'd blow something out. When I was in Italy in 1995 for school, I had brought my hairdryer and adapter and we stayed in this small inn, and a few times I blew the circuit and had to ask the owner to fix it.

ETA - have a great trip!!

I worked for Penguin for five years (was laid off in March). I never went to Frankfurt (not part of my job) but I remember gathering materials for the people who were. It was always such a crazy time of year. That and Bologna.

I tried getting back into children's publishing but haven't had the best of luck. I am working now but I wish I was still in publishing.

Have fun in Frankfurt. I have heard it is like a whirlwind of appts.
