Corian - Pros & Cons

Hi Everyone,

We are currently re-doing our kitchen.

We are doing the works: new tile, oak cabinets and pantry, a new faux paint job and now were are deciding on countertops. We are looking Corian.

Does anyone of any feedback, good and bad, about Corian? Do yo recommend Corian, why or why not?

Thanks!

Re: Corian - Pros & Cons

We recently redid our kitchen and we have a Corian countertop. While it is long lasting in my opinion it is a very high maintenence countertop. It needs to be polished regularly and it shows every single waterspot. Also one of the things about it is that you are supposed to be able to sand out any scratches, but I have tried and while they have come out you can definately see the that the spot looks different than the rest of the countertop. It is not as shiny. When it was installed I received a care kit, instructions and and an instructional video tape. I followed the instructions but haven't had the greatest success. I really wanted Silestone but DH wanted Corian so that's what we got. If I had to do it again I would not get Corian.

Edited to add pic of countertop so you can see what it looks like finished.

Thanks for the feedback. My FI wants Corian, but after reading your experience I think we are going to re-think things.

I was just on the Corian site reading and looking at the colors. What color did you choose? From the pic it looks like Beach.

Your kitchen looks beautiful. Thanks for posting a pic.

Why is Silestone better in your opinion?

Silestone is maint free. Its supposed to be as hard as granite but you dont have to seal it. Its just about as expensive as grante too. Ours (installed by the former owner) does not as shine like granite, it looks sort of flat. I dont know if thats supposed be the finish or something happened to it. Home Depot Expo has a great selection of countertop materials including Corian and Silestone.

I love your kitchen Wendy!

I think its pretty but the maintance is ridiculous. If you cut on the counter and dont use a cutting board, you'll see the scratches, if you drop a plate on the counter and the plate breaks it will leave a scratch or something in the counter, every little thing it picks up. maintance is a pain. What i do like is the edges are rounded instead of squared which is a nice look.

Its pretty but I dont know if the maintance is really worth it.

My parents have Corian countertops and they look pretty - my mom likes them a lot. Here is a pic of me on top of them getting my makeup done...
