I was wondering what everyone paid for their fondont cake?? We're having about 120 people at our wedding and are looking at a 3 circle tier cake. A cake comes with our package at the reception hall, but they will not do fondont and was thinking about ordering one instead. Thanks!

Re: Cost of Fondont Cake
I think at most RHs, if you choose one of their cakes but have it done in fondant it will cost about $100-$150 extra.

It can get pretty expensive depending on which cake designer you go to particularly in the city areas. Fondant usually goes for more than butter cream. I wouldn't recommend it for summer weddings, it will melt right off the cake.

Re: Cost of Fondont Cake
We liked the look of fondant, but a lot of people say that it tastes either funny, or just not as good. We met with our baker, and he told us he can make the buttercream frosting look just as smooth (and showed us cakes where it was just as smooth as fondant), so I think we are doing that.

it was delicious. I am not a huge cake eater, but I did enjoy it. I didnt notice a funny taste or anything. Black Forest made it.

I don't necessarily remember a funny taste when I've had fondant on a cake. The texture though I am definitely NOT a fan of. I love it...until I'm chewing on it.... JMO

I'm not sure this is true, but one of my BMs took some cake classes and they told her you really aren't supposed to eat the fondant, just the frosting under the fondant.

Re: Cost of Fondont Cake
If you watch the Ace of Cakes or any of those Food Network shows with cake making, they always seem to peel off the fondant before serving the cake itself.
I don't know if you're supposed to eat it or not. We're going for our tasting on 6/20 and we'll figure it out then since our RH does our cake. I have a picture of what I want it to look like, and I'll trust them to do it right.

just my honest opinion! but if it is a good bakery then the fondant should be awesome! and it is edible!! most bakers won't put inedible things on their cakes... there are people who just don't like it.

My MOH bakes wonderful cakes and makes her own fondant. It's completely edible. You just want to watch out for the colored fondant like black cuz it can get all over your teeth

Re: Cost of Fondont Cake
I've baked cakes and decorated with Fondant. it's kinda like playing with a sugar form of play-doh. It has no real taste, it gets flavored (usually vanilla) by the baker as they are making it. Some fondant therefore tastes better than others, and I personally like the fondant made from scratch much better than the all ready made one that you can buy. Overall, it is edible, but I do not usually eat it. I think it does have a weird consistency when I'm eating it with cake. I use it for decorating and don't expect people to eat it.
