Costa RIca

Costa RIca

Hi! DH and I are in the process of planning a trip to CR for our one year anniversary in July. We are staying part of the time at La Mansion Inn (southern/Manuel Antonio part of trip) and part of the time in the Northern Pacific Region. Our travel agent recommended Paradisus or Four Seasons but we are looking for something a little smaller and intimate...any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm going in April - my FH and I are big into surfing - if you're surfers there's a lot of nice houses to rent - we love Tamarindo. If you're into that I can ask my FH where we're staying. He's gone 2X before.

I never surfed but does that mean the beach is too rough to go into ?

Not really... There's different types of waves... when it's really rough, the waves 'close out' or 'crumble' and you can't really surf them. You want the waves to be clean, they are 2' to 3' and perfect to learn on in Costa Rica. Usually the surrounding water is calm but there's waves in a particular spot (depending on a point break or a beach break) that come in sets. Long Island is almost all beach breaks, but there's still good surfing here like in West Hampton, and you know what the water here is like (to compare). I've only been surfing 2 years, my FH has been surfing 25 (yes we're older :)) so I'm not as good with terminoligy & explaining it as he is :)

ahaahah Im 35 so Im not sure if I fall on my azz how quickly I could get up!!! Sounds like fun though. is where your staying near arenal or manual antonio?

I'd def give it a shot! NO sharks right!

Well, there are sharks there, but we didn't see any - anywhere there's salt water there are sharks. My FH owns a dive shop so he has no fear of it.

There are different sections, we decided to see two main areas (Manual Antonio/more jungle/park and a beach area which the volcano is close to)....we are going for 8-9 days.

I know that we are doing a day trip to the volcano from Playa Tamarindo. Not sure about the cloud forest, I do think that is south near Manuel Antonio. GL!

Hey!
FH and I went to CR in Novembe rof '03!
We stayed in Jaco, which was great!
The whole country is the size of West Virginia, so you can basically get anywhere from anywhere!
We took a day trip to Arenal Volcano, it was maybe 1.5 hours each way? Closer to Tamarindo, though.
The Cloud forest is in MonteVerde, which is in the northern region, around San Jose and Arenal. Probably another feasible day trip from Tamarindo.
When you are in Manuel Antonio, DEFINITELY do a river boat tour, or if you are more adventurous, go white water rafting- the animals and scenery are amazing! We loved seeing howler monkeys and the 3 toed sloth.
Zip line canopy tour is another must do.
As for surfing, stay away from the river mouth at the estuary in Tamarindo. The water is roughist there.
Otherwise, definitely take some surf lessons! Check out the Best Western in Tamarindo, the owners are American, and they have a Robert August surf shop there!
You are gonna have such a blast! Best vacation ever!!!
