Court Reporter / Stenographer

Are there any court reporters/stenographers on LIW? I'm a freelancer working mostly out of the City.

I had a super long/hard case today with the IRS and would much rather look at wedding stuff than work on tomorrow's case. Even the attorney said she was gonna bust out the cocktails LOL I'll pass on the cocktails and go for the bag o' cookies BAD!!

I'm not a stenographer, but I'm a law student and I was a court intern two summers ago. Man, I do NOT envy you on the IRS thing. It amazes me how you can even manage to get what some people are saying - everyone seems to mumble and sometimes even make up words!

LOL Thanks so much. it's called creative writing!! just kidding. if you want a giggle, I had a schizophrenic witness once and him and all his personalities testified for about 6 hours. yeah, it's challenging in new ways every day.

where are you planning on working after school?? what school are you at?

I do lots of Workers' Comp work, NY State admin hearings, IRS investigations, med mal, some depos for the US attorney's office, etc.... Kind of all over the place b/c I'm a freelancer. I used to work in grand jury in brooklyn too. i've been trying to get into the courts in long island, if some spot opens up i'm def trying for it.

Best of luck with school and the wedding planning

Thanks!!! I'm at St. John's and I will most likely be at the firm I summered at next year, but they're giving offers late so I dont' want to count my chickens before they hatch!!!

Do you know who you would have to go thru to get a job at the LI courts? Are they hired directly by the office of court admin? If so, I can try to help you - I still keep in touch with my judge and law secretary, maybe they could help you? I'm just not sure the hierarchy for hiring stenographers.

Have a good day

Why don't you try one of these big companies like Diamond or something? That way you have tons of work to choose from. Although, they prob dont give the same benefits as the court system!

Jess, congrats! You're almost done!!! this year is going to fly by.

BTW Thanks so much for keeping me in mind re the position too. I don't think i'll want to travel to downtown when I move to wantagh, so a cout in LI would be great and may even be a pay increase.

Freelancing could be a pain in the A*(% The lawyers told me I could sleep late today because my case starts at 12, bless their hearts. I was up at 7 editing already. also, i kind of miss having an office where you have friends and a desk!!

Re: Court Reporter / Stenographer

I had heard some not so nice stories about Diamond when i was in school. I even tried to call them and they told me 1.50 a page LOL!!!! (and I literally laughed out loud) and when I was at GJ my friend took me to go meet jane at the brooklyn office, but I still have to say that I have those stories running around in my head.

do you do any work for them?? i'll def give them a call if you had a good experience with them. there are also several offices so I don't know which one would be the best one for me.

right now I'm with Tankoos and Fink. I like them both but the work is very challenging and with Tankoos I rarely get copy orders, which is great side $$. The page $$ is ok.

I'll give Diamond a call and give them my rates.....it can't hurt and I'm sure they have lots of jobs, like you said.

Thanks!!!!
