Crafty Girls - Advice on Painting Furniture Please!

Hey All you crafty girls...I need some help! I am currently decorating our guest BR and have a shabby-chic thing going on, thus lots of white in the room. I just bought (and assembled myslef, thank you very much ) a dresser from Ikea that is finished wood. Its the perfect shape and size - it just needs to painted white. So, do you think I need to sand it first? Will a regular piece of sandpaper work? This is my first attempt at any sort of furniture work so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

And I promise to post pics when I'm done. Thanks!

sometimes their wood doesn't need sanding, but i just use regular sandpaper for sanding wood.

I would go over it once with a large grit sandpaper and then once with a fine sandpaper and then the paint should go right on. You may not even need to sand it - try painting a hidden spot on it and see how it goes first so you don't waste all that work for nothing!

Thanks girls - I'll try the no-sanding first in an inconspicuous spot. Thats my kind of refinishing job !

If you are painting on wood, you may need to prime it first. It will seal the wood so it doesn;t soak up the paint and look uneven. It also needs to be sanded lightly between each coat.

I want to see pics! i love this but never have attempted it myself!!!

I wanted to strip a dresser and redo it but never got around to it so i dumped it.. i actually tried to give it to the salvation army, but they came and said no thank you! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!! there was nothing wrong with it except some scratches and the draws needed to be back inline...

if the wood is finished, you should sand it first. My sister painted her bedroom furniture without sanding it first, and the paint started to peel off soon after. I guess you could also try some time of flat primer, that might work.

Ah Ha! Primer - see, I never would have thought of that! It will be my weekend project to finish this dresser. Thanks again.

Ok, I think primer will work, just to be sure, ask the guy at the hardware store when you go to buy the paint.
