Is anyone planning or has anyone been to a wedding at a place other than the usual reception halls?? I'm not trying to win a contest for most original wedding of the year or anything, just something elegant and affordable... Any thoughts?

Re: Creative Wedding Venues?
you might want to look into museums, libraries or botanical gardens...but they usually have site fees associated with having receptions there. But here are some to look into:
The NY Public Library Wave Hill (in Riverdale, Bronx) NY Botanical Garden (in the Bronx) Queens Botanical Garden (Flushing, Queens) Queens Farm Museum (Flushing, Queens) Planting Fields Arboretum (Oyster Bay) Vanderbilt Mansion (Centerport)

Re: Creative Wedding Venues?
Vineyard weddings are getting popular know, so I don't know if it qualifies as creative... but its definitely not a reception hall!
I'm doing one that has a big open field by the rows of vines, it looked ideal spot to put up a big huge party tent. Reminded me of some movie and I fell in love with it. Even though my mother saw it and was a bit horrified at the lack of anything.
We are putting up a party tent, a caterer's tent, restroom trailer, a lounge tent, and a ceremony area.
Since the Vineyard doesn't have a big enough room for backup in case of weather, I have a back up rain tent to go over the restrooms and ceremony. And my tent is extra big and sturdy.
I hope it sounds like the whole thing is a big pain in the butt, because it is. Avoid doing this at all costs, unless your insane like me.
But in the end, I have a gorgeous tent, a gorgeous ceremony (even in the rain, I love the vineyards in the rain) I love the town ... and I don't have to compromise with:
1. Another wedding happening right after, right before, or next door! 2. Time restrictions 3. Food restrictions 4. ugly ceilings, carpets, walls, stairs, bathrooms or all of the above. 5. uninvited guests crashing the wedding, because they know I'm getting married and they happen to live in walking distance to the venue.
Having a wedding that a little hard for your guests to get to is a hidden advantage. You will only get people that truely want to be there show up.

I'm getting married at Coindre Hall. It's not a reception hall. It's a mansion rented from Suffolk County and I'm bringing a caterer in.

Re: Creative Wedding Venues?
I have to add... this is costing me a lot more than I expected.
But it can be done very affordably, if you are willing to compromise.
For instance to rent the vineyard for the day was only 3,000, and I didn't have to buy their wine, hire any of their vendors or do anything I didn't want.
I could have set up some grills and have FH barbeque up a storm!

I had a tent wedding at an Inn in Hampton Bays (not a typical hall..I'm not into chandeliers and wallpaper)...it's basically a nice old house on the water...with a big back lawn...which was what i always wanted...more of a backyard party feel....not 'creative' but definitely not a typical venue

There is one young lady on the Knot that just had her wedding at the Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown (just south of Bayville). It's a beautiful old estate--and it sounds like her wedding was lovely! She too had to work with a rental company to bring in all her stuff--but it seemed like the vendors she used were very reliable and helpful. HTHs!

Re: Creative Wedding Venues?
you should check out the Woodlands in Woodbury--it's a historic mansion that only does one wedding at a time, so you don't have the catering hall vibe. and you can decorate the mansion with your family pictures and personal touches, so you can really make it look however you want

Re: Creative Wedding Venues?
for some reason I am obsessed with beer gardens...I keep thinking how much fun that would be complete with polka. I was in a fire department today that had a really cool reception hall upstairs....It made me wonder what other unknown municipal spaces there are. Here's one...the smithtown historical society brush barn...it's a dance space with a lot of charm. Or you could go with a boat! If your town has a village green with a gazebo I think a main street USA type event could be fun. I also watch my big redneck wedding on CMT...they have all sorts of odd weddings. Will keep thinking. Shelter Island...Fire Island?

Riverhead Aquarium...but I heard their food isn't great. But its neat to have the fish etc around you.
In Port Jeff there is the ice rink by the water, by Danfords, (not sure of the name) They have a hall but I think you have to bring in your own caterer. Nice bc different and on the water. One event at a time

You could try a restaurant of a culture that hasn't been tried by your guests. I'm Russian and had my wedding in a Russian restaurant, but to the non-Russian guests, this was really cool and new.
The food is still American, but it's great b/c your guests don't have to choose between what to order - it's all family style, with all the filet mignon, shrimp, chicken, sushi, etc. that your guests can eat. There are NO time restrictions, and it already comes with the band, so it really saves you time and money.
FM me for more info.

My wedding is at The Rotunda on Kingsborough Community College's campus in Brooklyn. You rent the site and then you bring in all of your vendors, including the caterer. It is on the water, and it has a really great view. Check out my album for pics or FM me for more info. The website for The Rotunda is not good at all. You really have to go there to see it for yourself.

We were going to get married at Bailey, but it doesn't fit many people. The grounds are very pretty though.
