Re: Credit Card
As a former employee of American Express
STAY AWAY FROM AMEX!!!!
They offere great things like miles, points, etc...but the intrest rate will kill you. Also they are a charge card not a credit card which means, you have to pay the entire balance in full at the end of the month.
Amex Optima is a credit card, but again the INTEREST WILL KILL YOU!!
Go for Visa. They have some good offers.
Also per year amex is like 50+ dollars

Re: Credit Card
I definitely agree... Blue is the way to go. No fees. We're getting HM plane tix for free from the points! Nice way to save some $$.

Re: Credit Card
Another Amex fan here. I use a credit card for convenience not a loan -- interest rate is irrelevant if you pay off the bill each month. I have the regular green card, I'm not sure if it differs from the blue. I love that the Rewards can be used for so many different things -- airlines, hotels, car rentals, gift certificates, etc. Most other reward cards tie you to one particular airline. The annual fees do add up though, the rewards are only worth it if you and your hubby charge $10,000+ a year for home or on a corporate card for work... I need to look into the blue card!

Re: Credit Card
yes. I was with the company for 5 years, so I know a lot about there charge cards and what they apply to.
Amex blue was first launched for online purposes to permit you to buy stuff securly on line. (I dont know if you noticed it on your statement or got a letter about this, but they are selling the machine you can hook up to your computer which enables you to swipe your blue card instead of having to type the numbers in)
For me Optima was the best card because it was a credit card. Green, Blue, gold, platinum and they truely elite where there are only 500 in the world BLACK card are all charge cards.
I believe BLUE has to be paid at the end of the month in full.
edited to add: I had 3 Amex cards. I was on membership rewards and i got rid of all my amex cards.
With Amex you have to pay the entire bill at the end of the month. Its a charge card not a credit card.
Also you have to pay a yearly charge for membership rewards.

Re: Credit Card
I keep remembering stuff after I post
With Amex, you can not be even one day late. They carry very big on your credit rating.
If you are even one day late, interest charge.
I am not trying to sway your decision, just letting you know from a former amex employee

Re: Credit Card
I use Amex Blue and I also have the Gold Charge card from Amex. They are my 2 favorite CC's.
I pay Blue monthly and the Gold Card is paid in full at the end of the month. Right now I have 0% on the Blue.

Re: Credit Card
The interest rates can be high yes, but if you are in good standing with any credit card company, you can lower your rate by simply calling and asking. If they want to keep you, they'll do it. I did.
Blue doesn't have to be paid at the end of the month, but like any other credit card, you incur a finance charge if you don't. Of course, like any other card, you get charged a late fee if you are late. If you aren't late, and you don't carry a balance, you don't have to worry.
Amex Blue has been great, the benefits are outstanding, the protection is great, the rewards are good. I'm happy!

Re: Credit Card
I agree...the Blue card is great and you do not have to pay it off in full at the end of the month. As your standing with the company gets better your interest rate will be lowered.
Chip...I was with Amex/Lehman for 5 years myself....when did you work there??

Re: Credit Card
I hate my blue card, the interest rate is 13% right now. I have a bank one and Bank of america both have no or 4% interest rates

Re: Credit Card
I did some research on cc for the same reason and ended up with the amex card. My reasons were that amex did not limit the amount of rewards you could accumulate. A lot of the other cards limited you to 8,000 points a year. I ended up applying for the Platinum card (they give you a free companion ticket on participating airlines when you buy a first class/business class ticket). My DH travels a lot. I think any of the amex's are good. JMO Good luck!

Re: Credit Card
I am a little late here, but I absolutely love capital one platinum (9.9% apr). The only card that I use on a regular basis. I also have an MBNA card, but hate their customer service (which is why I dont' use the card as much), and have a citibank, which has a higher rate, and they didn't want to lower it.
I also have an amex, and hate it, only use for work purposes.
I used to have an ATT card, but that had a high rate so I cancelled it.
