I was just talking to a co-worker about crossing into NJ to buy a dress without the tax. Has anyone done this? Doesn't it make alterations difficult? Opinions?

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
they have to ship it to you across state lines to avoid paying tax. Not sure if that applies to states on adjoining borders, though....

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
I just moved to NJ and bought my dress in LI but had them ship it to me in NJ to avoid paying tax. They were fine with doing that. I think it's a great way to save money if you are close to NJ.

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
I wonder if it will be worth it to hunt down a good seamstress. If I will have to shell out big bucks for the alterations, it might not be worth it. I guess I should find a dress I want and then figure out if it is worth it. Thanks

Great seamstress to recommend. Her name is Karin Y, a gown designer in Astoria. Her # is 718-278-9295 and web site is www.yvgvesdotter.com.
Good Luck!!!

Do you know anyone that lives in Jersey or CT where you can have the dress shipped to? This way you can still do the alterations in New York where ever you buy the dress.

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
Whoa! So if I order from a salon and have it sent to me, they will ship it to an out of state address and I can still get alterations done there? That would be awesome.
Aliciahelene--thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it.

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
Now here's a question: What do I do if I want to order it from a store where I tried it on and they have all of my info? Does it matter that I will have it shipped out of state? Do I have to lie and say I am someone else?

Could you say you are moving to Jersey..but will be coming in for alterations because you still have family in Long Island?

It might be cheaper tp pay the tax then the gas traveling back and forth. It depends on how many times you must go back for alterations.

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
If I can order from a Long Island store and have it shipped to a friend (or fellow LIW ) and then continue my alterations at the store, that would be great.
Does anyone know if you are charged sales tax based on the state you live in or the state you buy in?

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
I think it's the state you live in but I don't know if that only applies like online. When the shop is in a different state from you. And you ordered like over the phone.

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
Is there a good seamstress in your area? If you know the dress ya want and the size..find a place that has it in Jersey, then just get your alterations there from a seamtress. I understand it taht you pay sales tax depending on where you are buying!. We dont have tax on clothes in Jersey. Its a beautiful thing!!

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
So if I call in an order at an LI bridal salon and have it sent to NJ but tell them I will be coming to LI for fittings, I could save myself some money.
Has anyone ever done this?

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
The store charges tax based on where they are sending the dress. You can ask the store that you have been to if you can have them send the dress to Jersey to save the tax. Most places will should not have a problem to this. (You might want to say that you have a house in jersey, since technically they need to send the dress to where you live other wise I believe its tax fraud or something like that) I hope this makes sense......

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
Hey, I live in NJ and am planning everything on LI since my whole family is there.
I have some advice: don't EVER EVER EVER EVER travel back and forth on a Friday, Sat, or Sunday night!!! You will be sitting in traffic for hours!!!
It's such a pain to go back and forth because I have to plan it around certain hours of the day!

Re: Crossing the Border to buy a dress
I went to David's Bridal in Freehold to order my dress and saved $$$$! I highly reccomend it. They are nicer in NJ first off, and the service was wonderful!
Alterations can be done at tons of places here in LI.
