Custom Gown Crisis... Please Help!!! sorry LONG

Hi Ladies, I am posting this for my sister she is getting married in Feb of next year. She ordered her dress custom made from a designer some time last year. She wanted something different we went all over the place looking for a gown and she never saw what she liked. At last she walked into to this store where this lady had very nice gowns and dresses that she made. OK to make a long story short she had this lady design her a dress and loved it NOW that the finish product is done she does not like the dress anymore and she felt she paid to much and the dress don't look WOW and so on. And to be honest with you the dress does not look 8k. She could have got this dress from klienfields or any bridal salon for more than half the price but when brides say that they want something there is nothing that you can say to change her mind. I really feel very bad about this I wish there is something that I can do.

ANY IDEAS???????????????

I thought that when a dress is made by a seamstress it actually tends to cost less or the same as what you'd pay for in a bridal salon. For 8k I'd expect Vera Wang herself to sew that dress together.

Can she take it to another seamstress to maybe change it around and something more to it for the extra WOW shes looking for. I don't think you can just give 8k and not use it. Something can be done I'm sure.

Good luck!

That is what I thought too but apparently this designer does a lot of dresses for some important people she charges a lot. I would admit that she did have a lot of nice dresses in the store and her book that she made. My sister just wanted a dream dress with real cystals. But I would agreee 8k for a dress that Vera wang did not make with her bare hands is crazy but, that is what she wanted. I just need to find a way to help. Tomorrow we are going to a bridal salon to see if she finds anything that she likes off the rack...

If she hasn't already done so, your sister should try to figure out exactly what it is about the dress that she doesn't like. Is it the shape, the crystals, etc. Then, she can work with the designer to fix the dress. At least, she has a few months to work on the dress. Good luck!

I have no clue as to what to do, other than to figure out what she doesn't like about it, and take it to a cheaper seamstress for the changes....I think at this point, buying another dress is crazy. She spent 8K having this thing made, this (or some version of it) is what she needs to work with, not scrapping it for something new. As her sister, she needs you to give her a sanity check, to tell her when she is off to the races, this is one of those times. Good luck

I hate to say it custom gowns do cost a lot more. My mother is a dress maker and if you see or know of all the work that goes into making a gown you would understand.

First of all fabric for bridal gowns is not cheap. I mean hundreds and hundreds of dollars a yard. (think of how long your train is?) This woman probally spent close to 2grand on fabric, beads, lace and other odds and ends if not more.

And a lot of the work on bridal gowns is hand work. THink of how many hours she is spending with you designing the gown, shopping for supplies and then making it. Believe me it didnt all happen in one week.
It isnt like goes and buying a gown from the bridal center where it is made in a factory probally overseas.

Enough about that.

Have your sister talk to the designer and I am sure together they will be able to make changes to the gown to make her happy in it. The last thing this designer wants is an unhappy bride.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I had my dress custom made and she worked with me to change everything that made me unhappy. You just have to make sure you fix things you are unhappy with during the right times of the dress making..otherwise she might give you a hard time about the change. Again, the last thing this designer wants is to have an unhappy bride in her design. The lady I worked with knew that I would be advertising for her all day and night!!!! and didn't want me bashing her at my wedding..
