There is a place that just opened up in St. James that does custom dresses. Does anyone know how much that would cost. I would love to have one made for me from scratch.
that sounds like a great idea!! Out of the millions of dresses I feel like i have tried on, each dress has one characteristic that I love, then something else that I hate... I wish I could take one thing from each dress and put them all into one... but i think i would be nervous about ordering a custom made dress that just opened up and doesnt have much of a reputation yet...
I don't know what your budget is but my cousins each had their dresses made in the bridal building in Manhattan for under $1500. It might be worth looking into.

There are a couple of places in Brooklyn, but they charge about $3,000.
I don't know anything about the place in St. James specifically, but I'm having mine custom made for a little under 2K, which includes all fabric and labor. The best part was shopping for the fabric - I gained a lot of knowledge from the process. I dress shopped at a few boutiques, and then decided on a design much like the one in my avatar pic after learning what was most flattering on my frame and suited my style. Depending on the fabrics and detailing you choose, you can spend as little or as much as you like. But you most definitely should see the handiwork before committing to a specific dressmaker.
